Modeling and physical properties of diphenylalanine peptide nanotubes containing water molecules

V. S. Bystrov et al.

Summary: Results of DFT (VASP) and semi-empirical (HyperChem) calculations on D-chiral diphenylalanine (D-FF) peptide nanotube (PNT) structures, empty and filled with water/ice clusters, show enhanced dipole moment and polarization after optimization. The water/ice cluster acquires a helix-like structure similar to D-FF PNT, leading to discussions on possible ferroelectric properties of the tubular water/ice helix-like cluster inside the D-FF PNT.

2D Layered Dipeptide Crystals for Piezoelectric Applications

Pavel S. Zelenovskii et al.

Summary: This study reports the fabrication of layered biomolecular crystals of diphenylalanine (FF) through a co-assembly of l,l- and d,d-enantiomers of FF monomers, and investigates their crystal structure, thermal and chemical stabilities, and piezoelectric properties. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that FF enantiomers exhibit strong out-of-plane piezoelectricity, almost an order of magnitude higher than in quartz. The grown crystals demonstrate better thermal and chemical stabilities and can be exfoliated to form a 2D piezoelectric material with potential applications in biocompatible and ecologically friendly electromechanical microdevices.
