Targeting adhesion in fungal pathogen Candida albicans

Antifungal Activity of Melaleuca alternifolia Essential Oil (TTO) and Its Synergy with Itraconazole or Ketoconazole against Trichophyton rubrum

Summary: Over the past 20-30 years, Trichophyton rubrum has been the most common cause of dermatophytosis, with a prevalence of 70%. Treatment for infections caused by Trichophyton spp. typically involves azole drugs, but resistance can develop over time. This study evaluated the antifungal properties of tea tree oil against T. rubrum and found that it showed fungicidal activity and synergism when combined with azole drugs. The combination therapy may reduce the required dose of azoles and minimize side effects.

Anti-adherence and Anti-fungal Abilities of Thymol and Carvacrol Against Candida Species Isolated From Patients with Oral Candidiasis in Comparison with Fluconazole and Voriconazole

Summary: This study demonstrated the significant inhibitory properties of thymol and carvacrol on the adherence and growth of azole susceptible- and -resistant Candida isolates. Thymol showed more effective inhibition on adherence of all Candida species than carvacrol, and was more effective for preventing the adherence of yeast cells to polystyrene.
