Salicylic Acid Modulates Antioxidant System, Defense Metabolites, and Expression of Salt Transporter Genes in Pisum sativum Under Salinity Stress

Farhan Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of seed priming with salicylic acid (SA) on reducing the adverse effects of salt stress in pea seedlings. The results showed that seed priming with SA alleviated the negative impact of salinity on overall plant performance, including growth and photosynthetic attributes. SA achieved this by inducing enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, promoting soluble sugar and proline accumulation, and regulating ion homeostasis. Seed priming with SA could be a promising approach for cultivating salt-tolerant plants.

Potassium induces carbohydrates accumulation by enhancing morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes in soybean under salinity

Parveen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of potassium sulphate fertilization on physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as sugar contents of two soybean cultivars under salt stressed conditions. The results showed that potassium application induced salt tolerance in soybean cultivars, improving growth parameters, chlorophyll contents, antioxidant enzymes, gas exchange characteristics, and sugar contents. The Pioneer cultivar was more responsive to K(2)SO(4) fertilization compared to Jack, displaying better production of antioxidants, gas exchange parameters, and sugar contents under salt tolerant conditions.

Differential gene expression reveals candidate genes for osmotic stress response in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) involved in different molecular pathways

Ghassen Abid et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify key genes involved in salt and drought response in faba beans through in silico analysis and qRT-PCR, resulting in the discovery of 25 stress-related genes associated with important cellular processes. Gene expression analysis in leaves and roots of different genotypes under stress conditions revealed differential expression patterns, suggesting the important roles of these genes in abiotic stress tolerance responses. The identified osmotic-responsive genes hold potential for use as markers in breeding programs for stress-tolerant faba bean varieties.

Different Sensitivity Levels of the Photosynthetic Apparatus in Zea mays L. and Sorghum bicolor L. under Salt Stress

Martin A. Stefanov et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different NaCl concentrations on the photosynthesis of maize and sorghum, revealing stronger impacts in maize compared to sorghum at certain NaCl concentrations. The changes in primary PSII photochemistry influenced the electron transport rate and photosynthetic rate, with maize showing stronger effects. Additionally, sorghum exhibited better salt tolerance at higher NaCl concentrations, associated with structural alterations in photosynthetic membranes and stimulation of cyclic electron flow around PSI.
