Impact of scalpel type on operative time and acute complications in thyroidectomies

Tamires Santos Fraga et al.

Summary: Thyroidectomy is a common surgery for thyroid diseases, and a comparison study was conducted on the performance of monopolar and bipolar electrical and ultrasonic techniques in terms of operative time and postoperative complications. The results showed that ultrasonic or bipolar scalpel significantly reduced operative time and the incidence of transient hypoparathyroidism.

Prospective, Randomized, Comparative, Multicenter Study of the Hybrid Ultrasonic Advanced Bipolar Device and the Ultrasonic Coagulating Shears in Open Thyroidectomy

Wan Wook Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that the HUB and ultrasonic coagulating shears showed similar operation times, postoperative surgical results, and morbidity in open thyroidectomy. However, the total amount of bleeding was significantly less in the HUB group. Overall, HUB demonstrated comparable efficacy and safety to ultrasonic coagulating shears in thyroid surgery.

Health technology assessment through the six sigma approach in abdominoplasty: Scalpel vs electrosurgery

C. Ricciardi et al.

Summary: Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce excess abdominal skin and fat, often associated with risks of complications. This study compared incision techniques using scalpel or electrosurgery in patients undergoing abdominoplasty, with results indicating advantages of using a scalpel in reducing drain output and wound healing problems.

Application of DMAIC Cycle and Modeling as Tools for Health Technology Assessment in a University Hospital

Alfonso Maria Ponsiglione et al.

Summary: The study compared the effectiveness of ceftriaxone and the combination of cefazolin and clindamycin in treating patients undergoing oral cavity cancer surgery on bone tissue. The results showed a significant reduction in LOS in the ceftriaxone treatment group, with younger patients and those with poor oral hygiene benefiting the most from the treatment. The models developed can improve patient outcomes by reducing LOS and related costs, enhancing patient safety, and improving the quality of care provided.

Health technology assessment through Six Sigma Methodology to assess cemented and uncemented protheses in total hip arthroplasty

Imma Latessa et al.

Summary: This study utilized Health Technology Assessment (HTA) with Six Sigma (SS) and DMAIC problem-solving strategies to compare cemented and uncemented prostheses in total hip arthroplasty. The analysis showed no statistically significant difference in costs and length of hospital stay between the two approaches.
