Nanocellulose in Emulsions and Heterogeneous Water-Based Polymer Systems: A Review

Stephanie A. Kedzior et al.

Summary: Nanocelluloses, including bacterial nanocellulose, cellulose nanocrystals, and cellulose nanofibrils, are cellulose-based materials with unique properties that can assemble at oil-water interfaces and provide new functionality to emulsion and latex systems. They offer unprecedented control as property modifiers for emulsion and polymer applications, influencing properties such as emulsion type, stability, and stimuli-responsive behavior. Nanocellulose can tune polymer particle properties and be used to produce capsules and polymer nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical, thermal, and adhesive properties.

Cellulose Nanocrystal (CNC)-Latex Nanocomposites: Effect of CNC Hydrophilicity and Charge on Rheological, Mechanical, and Adhesive Properties

Amir Saeid Pakdel et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with different surface properties were incorporated into emulsion-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) to modify their properties. CNCs with higher hydrophilicity and surface charge showed less association with latex particles and resulted in nanocomposites with lower strain-softening behavior and improved PSA properties.

Effect of Reaction Media on Grafting Hydrophobic Polymers from Cellulose Nanocrystals via Surface-Initiated Atom-Transfer Radical Polymerization

Michael Kiriakou et al.

Summary: Hydrophobic polymer-grafted cellulose nanocrystals were produced via SI-ATRP in two solvents, showing that enhanced colloidal stability in DMF led to easier polymer grafting accessing initiator groups. The resulting D-PBA-g-CNCs exhibited excellent dispersibility in toluene and stronger hydrophobic properties. The cellulose crystal structure was preserved and individual nanoparticles were retained in the grafting process, demonstrating the importance of optimizing CNC colloidal stability prior to grafting.

Hydrothermal treatments of aqueous cellulose nanocrystal suspensions: effects on structure and surface charge content

Oriana M. Vanderfleet et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of high temperature treatments on cellulose nanocrystal suspensions, finding that sulfated CNCs were most affected at high temperatures, while CNCs with a combination of sulfate and phosphate esters, or carboxylate groups, were less affected and maintained colloidal stability.

Incorporating Hydrophobic Cellulose Nanocrystals inside Latex Particles via Mini-Emulsion Polymerization

Amir Saeid Pakdel et al.

Summary: The study investigates the encapsulation of hydrophobic cellulose nanocrystals in polymeric latex particles through mini-emulsion polymerization. It is found that under certain conditions, effective encapsulation of CNC can be achieved. As the CNC loading increases, the performance of the nanocomposite materials improves but the polymerization rate decreases.

How latex film formation and adhesion at the nanoscale correlate to performance of pressure sensitive adhesives with cellulose nanocrystals

Elina Niinivaara et al.

Summary: Emulsion polymerized latex-based PSAs synthesized in water are more environmentally friendly but may underperform compared to solution polymerized counterparts. Studies show that the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can simultaneously improve the tack, and peel and shear strength of various acrylic PSAs. AFM analysis reveals that CNCs can enhance the cohesive strength of the films and nano-adhesion of latex films over small contact areas.
