An epidemiological study in wild carnivores from Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems reveals association between Leishmania infantum, Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon spp. infection and new hosts for Hepatozoon martis, Hepatozoon canis and Sarcocystis spp.

Maria Ortuno et al.

Summary: The study revealed the widespread presence of Hepatozoon, Babesia, and Leishmania infantum infections in wild animals in southern Spain, with the first report of Hepatozoon in badgers and wild cats. Co-infections of Babesia spp. or Hepatozoon spp. were associated with an increased risk of Leishmania infantum infection in wildlife.

Molecular Characterization of Hemoparasites and Hemoplasmas Infecting Domestic Cats of Southern India

Lanchalung Malangmei et al.

Summary: This study identified various blood parasites and hemoplasmas in apparently healthy cats from Kerala, southern India using light microscopic examination and PCR. The phylogenetic analysis revealed genetic variations and epidemiological information of these pathogens circulating in cats. Additionally, it is the first report of molecular detection of Cytauxzoon spp. and Candidatus M. turicensis in cats from India.

Primary Tick-Borne Protozoan and Rickettsial Infections of Animals in Turkey

Onur Ceylan et al.

Summary: Ticks in Turkey pose a significant challenge to animal production due to the endemic parasitic diseases they carry, including theileriosis, babesiosis, hepatozoonosis, cytauxzoonosis, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. These diseases have a major impact on the economy and animal health, especially for ruminants, and are controlled primarily through treatment and tick control measures.

Cytauxzoon sp. and Hepatozoon spp. in Domestic Cats: A Preliminary Study in North-Eastern Italy

Summary: Knowledge on Cytauxzoon sp. and Hepatozoon spp. presence in Italy is limited, with this study updating the current epidemiological scenario by investigating the occurrences in domestic cats from three regions of North-Eastern Italy. Hepatozoon silvestris prevalence was found to be significantly higher in Friuli Venezia Giulia region and in stray cats.
