The properties of cast iron rolls after multiple tempering operations are studied, with X-ray diffraction and phase analyses performed to determine the temperature range of phase transformations in the iron. Tests for abrasive wear and measurements of hardness are conducted. It is found that multiple tempering reduces the content of soft structural components in the rolls and increases the content of hard phases, leading to improved hardness and wear resistance of the working layer.
Specimens of cast iron rolls are studied after multiple operations of tempering at 300 degrees C. X-ray diffraction and phase analyses are performed. The temperature of the start and finish of the phase transformations in the iron are determined. Tests for abrasive wear are conducted, and the hardness of the rolls is measured. It is shown that multiple tempering lowers the content of soft structural components in the rolls (retained austenite, bainite and graphite) and raises the content of hard phases (martensite and carbides), which elevates the hardness and the wear resistance of the working layer of the cast forming rolls.
