Water-Dispersible Pd-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex Immobilized on Magnetic Nanoparticles as a New Heterogeneous Catalyst for Fluoride-Free Hiyama, Suzuki-Miyaura and Cyanation Reactions in Aqueous Media

Farhad Omarzehi Chahkamali et al.

Summary: A Pd-N-heterocyclic carbine complex immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles was synthesized and used as a heterogeneous catalyst in water-based Hiyama, Suzuki-Miyaura, and cyanation reactions, leading to efficient synthesis of biaryls and aryl nitriles. The catalyst exhibited excellent water dispersibility, activity, and magnetic recoverability.

Lipase-catalyzed esterification in water enabled by nanomicelles. Applications to 1-pot multi-step sequences

Vani Singhania et al.

Summary: In an aqueous micellar medium, commercially available lipase catalyzes esterification with high selectivity in the absence of any co-factors, aided by only 2% designer surfactant TPGS-750-M. An unexpected finding shows that the simple additive PhCF3 can significantly expand the range of usable acid/alcohol combinations. This allows for multiple chemo- and bio-catalyzed 1-pot, multi-step reactions to be performed in water.

Strategies to Tackle the Waste Water from α-Tocopherol-Derived Surfactant Chemistry

Christoph Krell et al.

Summary: The study examined the implications of using surfactant TPGS-750-M in water as a micellar reaction medium on the treatment of water waste and sustainable disposal. By determining the properties of the surfactant, a waste water concept was established which focuses on the lipophilicity and ester group lability of the molecule. The findings suggest preferred ways for designing surfactant processes and managing their aqueous waste streams in a sustainable manner.

Construction of chemoenzymatic cascade reactions for bridging chemocatalysis and Biocatalysis: Principles, strategies and prospective

Yunting Liu et al.

Summary: mo-CECRs, bridging chemo- and bio-catalysis, can achieve chemical transformations with minimized purification steps and improved stereochemical control, but face challenges due to incompatibilities between different catalytic disciplines. Progress, challenges, and strategies in this area are discussed in this review, offering guidance for the design of new and robust mo-CECRs.

Nanomicelle-enhanced, asymmetric ERED-catalyzed reductions of activated olefins. Applications to 1-pot chemo- and bio-catalysis sequences in water

Nnamdi Akporji et al.

Summary: The presence of nanomicelles derived from the surfactant TPGS-750-M greatly enhances bio-catalytic reactions involving ene-reductases (EREDs) in tandem with chemo-catalysis in water. The transformations provided illustrate the variety of sequences now possible in 1-pot, serving as representative examples of this environmentally attractive approach to organic synthesis.

Nitrile-containing pharmaceuticals: target, mechanism of action, and their SAR studies

Xi Wang et al.

Summary: The nitrile group is a significant functional group in pharmaceutical agents and natural products. Incorporating a nitrile group in lead compounds has become a promising strategy in rational drug design due to enhanced binding affinity, improved pharmacokinetics, and reduced drug resistance. Existing drugs with a nitrile moiety have been reviewed, categorized based on clinical usages, and include information on targets, pharmacology mechanisms, and SAR studies.
