Soil organic carbon transformation and dynamics of microorganisms under different organic amendments

Yajun Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the application of compost and improved compost is conducive to carbon sequestration, while the use of pig manure has the least favorable effect. Wheat straw plays a crucial role in steadily improving SOC levels.

Changes in soil carbon stocks under plantation systems and natural forests in Northeast India

Gaurav Mishra et al.

Summary: The development of plantations has a significant impact on soil organic carbon storage, with different types of plantations showing different trends in SOC stocks. Tea and cashew nut plantations may have a more positive role in carbon storage and climate change adaptation, while protecting and restoring natural forests may help reduce the risks of biodiversity loss.

Effects of straw incorporation and potassium fertilizer on crop yields, soil organic carbon, and active carbon in the rice-wheat system

Guoyin Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that straw incorporation significantly increased SOC content and labile C fractions over a long-term experiment. The treatment with straw incorporation plus a moderate amount of potassium fertilizer (SI + K) showed the highest SOC content and labile C fractions, resulting in improved soil fertility and crop productivity.

Drivers of Organic Carbon Stocks in Different LULC History and along Soil Depth for a 30 Years Image Time Series

Mahboobeh Tayebi et al.

Summary: This study focused on analyzing SOC stocks in crop soils in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, using machine learning algorithms and satellite images. The results showed that soil properties, terrain attributes, geology, bioclimatic parameters, and land use history were the most critical factors in controlling SOC stocks across different land use and soil depths. The random forest with recursive features elimination (RFE) was identified as an accurate technique for predicting SOC stocks and identifying controlling factors.

Projected soil organic carbon loss in response to climate warming and soil water content in a loess watershed

Fubo Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the Jinghe River Basin will experience significant increases in air temperature and annual precipitation in the future, leading to increases in root-zone SWC and SOC. However, future climate warming is projected to cause a significant decrease in SOC, with the combined effects of climate warming and SWC change better explaining the SOC loss.

A Contribution to Soil Fertility Assessment for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands

Hussam Hag Husein et al.

Summary: Soil fertility should be seen as a dynamic concept involving nutrient cycling and water supply for plant growth, particularly in arid and semi-arid lands. While traditional fertility assessment systems focus on organic matter content, crop experiments suggest that it may not always correlate with productivity. A new rule-based soil fertility system is proposed for dryland soils, integrating soil, climate, and landscape factors to provide more realistic fertility estimates.

The role of geochemistry in organic carbon stabilization against microbial decomposition in tropical rainforest soils

Mario Reichenbach et al.

Summary: The stabilization mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) in tropical African mountain forests are driven by reactive secondary mineral phases, influenced by soil geochemistry and disproportionately affected by soil fertility and depth. Different regions exhibit unique mineral stabilization mechanisms, with fluvial dynamics and soil moisture playing secondary roles in affecting SOC dynamics particularly in valley positions. fossil organic carbon (FOC) was also detected in some sites, with high C/N ratios, depleting N content, and it's decomposability variably influenced by fertile soil conditions. Geochemical properties of parent materials have a lasting impact on SOC stocks and its related mineral stabilization mechanisms in tropical soils, with variables including soil weathering, parent material geochemistry, soil fertility, and depth explaining a significant portion of the variability in SOC stocks.

Evidence for large microbial-mediated losses of soil carbon under anthropogenic warming

Pablo Garcia-Palacios et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic warming is expected to accelerate global soil organic carbon losses, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions and the need for more aggressive emission reduction measures to curb climate change. Studying the interactions between soil microbial communities and temperature, as well as how substrate availability affects SOC loss estimates, is crucial for improving the accuracy and precision of projected losses.

Effect of Organic Residues on Pesticide Behavior in Soils: A Review of Laboratory Research

Maria J. Carpio et al.

Summary: The application of organic residues as soil organic amendments is considered a sustainable option to solve the problem of uncontrolled waste accumulation, improve soil quality, and avoid irreversible degradation. However, the behavior of pesticides in soil can be affected by the presence of organic residues. Laboratory studies have shown that different factors related to organic residues, pesticides, and soil properties can influence processes such as adsorption-desorption, dissipation, and leaching of pesticides in soil. Future research is needed to extend these findings to field and modeling scales for a better assessment and prediction of pesticide fate in amended soil scenarios.

Modeling the effects of farming management practices on soil organic carbon stock under two tillage practices in a semi-arid region, Morocco

Summary: This study used the DNDC model to assess the impact of different management practices on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock in a semi-arid region under two tillage systems. Results showed that no-tillage practice significantly increased SOC content by 30% and applying higher crop residue rates and farmyard manure greatly improved SOC sequestration potential. Increasing fertilizer rate had minimal effect on SOC stock.
