CO2-Involved and Isocyanide-Based Three-Component Polymerization toward Functional Heterocyclic Polymers with Self-Assembly and Sensing Properties

Summary: CO2 utilization in polymerization for constructing functional materials has been further developed with a facile and efficient multicomponent polymerization in this study. The resultant poly(benzoyleneurea)s show good solubility, thermal stability, and well-defined structures, self-assembling into spheres and exhibiting unique aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) features for potential applications as fluorescent probes and visualization of self-assembly process. Polymers containing different tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units present varied self-assembly behaviors and limits of detection for Au3+ ions due to different intermolecular interactions, offering a new strategy for CO2 utilization and functional heterocyclic polymers for diverse applications.

Summary: This study presents a new type of carbon dioxide (CO2)-derived CPD with significant quantum yields in both solution and solid state. The synthesis of CPDs involved the polymerization of small molecules and the self-passivation of poly(hydroxyurethane) chains, allowing for solid-state fluorescence. Additionally, the synthesis process consumes a significant amount of CO2, offering a new method for fixing CO2 to functional carbon materials.
