Optimum design of viscous inerter damper targeting multi-mode vibration mitigation of stay cables

Hui Gao et al.

Summary: An optimum design procedure based on output feedback control theory is proposed in this study to suppress multi-mode cable vibrations using viscous inerter dampers. The proposed design method effectively minimizes the performance index of the cable-VID system and demonstrates superior control performance compared to traditional viscous dampers. However, the advantage of the VID for higher-order cable modes may diminish as the design cable mode increases.

Experimental study on high-mode vortex-induced vibration of stay cable and its aerodynamic countermeasures

Zhiwen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the high-mode vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of stay cables in cable-stayed bridges and effective suppression measures through experimental research. The results show that stay-cable VIV can be effectively suppressed by increasing the damping ratio under low damping conditions. Helical fillets are found to have limited effectiveness in suppressing high-mode VIV responses.

Optimal design of two viscous dampers for multi-mode control of a cable covering broad frequency range

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: This study explores a novel optimal design of two viscous dampers near a cable anchorage to control both low and high mode vibrations of cables. By investigating the mode shape characteristics of a cable with two viscous dampers, the complexity of optimal damper design is reduced.

In-plane dynamic behaviors of two-cable networks with a pretensioned cross-tie

Fangdian Di et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cross-tie pretension on in-plane dynamics of a cable network and finds that the cross-tie may reduce system frequency due to its pretension when not connected to the bridge deck, but seems to increase system frequencies when connected to the ground. The cross-tie pretension mainly affects the system dynamics by modifying cable tension, while the change in cable profile has limited influences on the system lower modes.

Free vibrations of hybrid cable networks with external dampers and pretensioned cross-ties

Fangdian Di et al.

Summary: This study proposes a refined model to investigate the effects of cross-ties on dynamics of a hybrid cable network system, considering cable sag and cross-tie pretension. The influence of cross-tie pretension on the system dynamics is closely related to the anchorage form of the cross-tie. Simplified analytical methods are presented and shown to be accurate except for the first two modes of the system.

Periodic Property and Instability of a Rotating Pendulum System

Ji-Huan He et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamical properties of a pendulum attached to a rotating rigid frame with a constant angular velocity. The analytic solution of the governing nonlinear differential equation of motion is obtained using He's homotopy perturbation method. The obtained solution is verified for high accuracy using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and He's frequency formulation. The stability condition of the motion is examined and discussed, and the impact of different parameters on the dynamical motion is revealed through graphical representations of time histories.
