The influence of microbial mats on travertine precipitation in active hydrothermal systems (Central Italy)

Giovanna Della Porta et al.

Summary: The study investigated three active hydrothermal travertine sites in Central Italy to characterize carbonate precipitates and associated microbial mats under varying physico-chemical parameters. It was found that the type of carbonate precipitates and microbial mat composition varied with decreasing water temperature, indicating a complex interaction between physico-chemical processes and microbial communities in carbonate precipitation.

Abiotic and biotic processes controlling travertine deposition: Insights from eight hot springs in Japan

Fumito Shiraishi et al.

Summary: The study examined eight hot springs in Japan to evaluate the contributions of abiotic and biotic processes on travertine deposition. The results showed that cyanobacteria on travertine surfaces played a significant role in trapping suspended particles and increasing the surface area for crystal growth, while abiotic processes dominated the travertine deposition. The mineralogical composition of travertines was significantly correlated with concentrations of SO42- and Mg2+, indicating their importance in controlling CaCO3 polymorphs.

Integrative analysis of the mineralogical and chemical composition of modern microbialites from ten Mexican lakes: What do we learn about their formation?

Nina Zeyen et al.

Summary: The study measured the chemical and mineralogical composition of microbialites from ten Mexican lakes, revealing a diverse mineralogical composition and positive correlations between microbialite size and parameters such as salinity. There were significant variations in trace element compositions of the microbialites between the lakes, with detrital contamination affecting their rare earth elements (REE) + Y patterns.

Towards a morphology diagram for terrestrial carbonates: Evaluating the impact of carbonate supersaturation and alginic acid in calcite precipitate morphology

Ramon Mercedes-Martin et al.

Summary: Ancient and recent terrestrial carbonate-precipitating systems are characterized by a varied array of calcite deposits, but understanding the relationship between calcite micro-morphology and sedimentary hydrogeochemical conditions remains a challenge. Experimental approaches are used to investigate the sedimentological causes of calcite morphogenesis, aiming to link calcite growth forms to specific hydrogeochemical contexts and (palaeo)environmental conditions. This study provides insights into the complex interactions between physico-chemical parameters affecting calcite precipitation and offers a process-oriented means for exploring questions around carbonate precipitate morphogenesis in the future.
