Response of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation to a warming climate in global climate models

Jadwiga H. Richter et al.

Summary: We compared the response of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) to a warming climate in eleven atmosphere general circulation models and found that there was no consistency in the QBO period response among the models, but there was a consistent decrease in the QBO amplitude. The differences in the QBO period response were strongly related to the changes in gravity wave momentum flux and tropical vertical residual velocity, while the decrease in QBO amplitude was correlated with changes in vertical residual velocity, parameterized gravity wave momentum fluxes, and to some degree the resolved upward wave flux.

Prediction of the quasi-biennial oscillation with a multi-model ensemble ofQBO-resolving models

Timothy N. Stockdale et al.

Summary: A multi-model study found that models have high skill in predicting the phase evolution of the QBO at 20-30 hPa, but variable quality in other aspects of QBO prediction. Models tend to have too weak QBO easterlies and can be either too strong or weak in QBO westerlies. Despite shortcomings, a multi-model ensemble can provide accurate and reliable QBO forecasts up to at least a year ahead.

Robust but weak winter atmospheric circulation response to future Arctic sea ice loss

D. M. Smith et al.

Summary: The extent to which Arctic sea ice decline affects mid-latitude atmospheric circulation is still debated. This study uses a multi-model experiment to show that Arctic sea ice loss weakens mid-latitude westerly winds, but the overall effect is small. The relationship between Arctic sea ice and atmospheric circulation has weakened in recent observations and is no longer inconsistent with models.

Teleconnections of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in a multi-model ensemble of QBO-resolving models

James A. Anstey et al.

Summary: The Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO) significantly influences the interannual variability of the tropical stratosphere and has high predictability, potentially improving seasonal and decadal forecasts. However, modeling uncertainties and errors may affect the accuracy of QBO teleconnections in atmospheric models.

Predictability of European Winters 2017/2018 and 2018/2019: Contrasting influences from the Tropics and stratosphere

Jeff Knight et al.

Summary: This study examined European winters of 2017-18 and 2018-19, analyzing the impact of sudden stratospheric warming events and the performance of the Met Office seasonal prediction system. It found that changes in the tropical troposphere and extratropical stratosphere can influence the North Atlantic-European atmospheric circulation, while the Madden-Julian Oscillation may play a critical role in specific meteorological events.

CMIP5/6 models project little change in the statistical characteristics of sudden stratospheric warmings in the 21st century

Jian Rao et al.

Summary: The study using state-of-the-art models found that there may be a slight increase in the frequency of sudden stratospheric warming events under moderate and strong emission scenarios, but other characteristics will not change significantly. The increase in frequency is most pronounced in mid-late winter in CMIP6, while no clear shift in seasonality is expected.

Transient Extratropical Response to Solar Ultraviolet Radiation in the Northern Hemisphere Winter

Yonatan Givon et al.

Summary: An intermediate complexity general circulation model is used to investigate the transient response of the NH winter stratosphere to modulated ultraviolet (UV) radiation by imposing an exaggerated UV perturbation. The enhanced UV radiation leads to immediate warming in the tropical upper stratosphere, spreading to the winter subtropics due to an accelerated Brewer-Dobson circulation. The study shows significant implications for observed stratospheric and tropospheric responses to solar variability on various time scales.

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Mark P. Baldwin et al.

Summary: Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are impressive fluid dynamical events characterized by large and rapid temperature increases in the winter polar stratosphere, which are usually caused by the breaking of planetary-scale waves propagating upwards from the troposphere. SSWs result in the breakdown of the polar vortex, along with rapid descent and warming of air in polar latitudes, affecting tropospheric weather and potentially leading to cold air outbreaks over North America and Eurasia.

The 2019 Southern Hemisphere Stratospheric Polar Vortex Weakening and Its Impacts

Eun-Pa Lim et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of a rare Southern Hemisphere stratospheric warming event in 2019, which led to a significant weakening of the polar vortex and dramatic temperature rise in the Antarctic stratosphere. The impacts of this event resulted in a record-breaking Antarctic warming compared to the previous one in 2002, with the vortex winds and temperatures moving downward to the surface and affecting the southern annular mode. Advanced seasonal forecast systems accurately predicted the vortex weakening and the development of negative SAM as early as late July.

Strengthened Causal Connections Between the MJO and the North Atlantic With Climate Warming

Savini M. Samarasinghe et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in causal pathways between the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) using historical and SSP585 simulations of the CESM2-WACCM coupled climate model. The results show that the influence of MJO on the North Atlantic strengthens in the future, primarily through teleconnections via the tropospheric pathway.

However, the response is delayed by 1 month and there is no improvement in the tropospheric response.

The Strong Stratospheric Polar Vortex in March 2020 in Sub-Seasonal to Seasonal Models: Implications for Empirical Prediction of the Low Arctic Total Ozone Extreme

Jian Rao et al.

Summary: This study reports on the strong stratospheric polar vortex in March 2020 and its coupling with Arctic ozone loss and predictability. Weak upward propagation of waves into the stratosphere in winter-early spring led to less ozone-rich air being transported to the Arctic stratosphere, contributing to around 40% of total Arctic ozone loss in March. Despite underestimating the Arctic total ozone, this extremely strong polar vortex event improved surface predictability on subseasonal timescales.

Quantifying Causal Pathways of Teleconnections

Marlene Kretschmer et al.

Summary: Teleconnections are sources of predictability for regional weather and climate, but the relative contributions of different teleconnections to regional anomalies are usually not understood. Adopting a causal inference-based framework in the statistical analysis of teleconnections can help overcome this challenge by explicitly including expert knowledge and drawing quantitative conclusions. This systematic causal approach to statistical inference should become standard practice in the study of teleconnections.

The influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation on the Madden-Julian oscillation

Zane Martin et al.

Summary: The stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and the tropospheric Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) are strongly linked in boreal winter. Observations show that MJO is stronger and longer-lasting during winters with easterly QBO winds. Despite the global impacts of the QBO-MJO connection, the mechanisms driving this link remain uncertain. Most numerical models are unable to reproduce the observed QBO-MJO relationship, indicating biases or deficiencies in the models' representation of key physical processes. Further research is needed to establish a working mechanism and improve model simulations of the QBO-MJO connection.
