How stereotypes and relationships influence women and underrepresented minority students' fit in engineering

Rebecca Campbell-Montalvo et al.

Summary: This study examines the experiences of women and URM students in engineering undergraduate programs, highlighting the challenges faced by non-majority students and how social networks and organizations can provide support to mitigate these challenges. Women and URM students who fit well were typically those with majority characteristics, while those facing threats to fit often encountered stereotypes and differential treatment. However, advice and resources from social networks and organizations helped alleviate fit issues and promote persistence in engineering for these students.

Summary: Research has shown that underrepresented and minoritized (URM) students who participate in professional engineering organizations (PEOs) and other engineering-related activities are more likely to persist in their engineering major. These students reported that PEOs help them network, reduce gender and race/ethnic isolation, and access professional resources to support their persistence.
