Constraining ultralight axions with galaxy surveys

A. Lague et al.

Summary: This study tests the effective field theory approach to mixed ultralight axion dark matter using mock galaxy catalogs and detects an anisotropic signature of ultralight axions in the galaxy quadrupole. The upper bounds for axion relic density are obtained based on galaxy clustering statistics from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, with improved constraints compared to using only cosmic microwave background data. The computational cost is reduced by 70% through the development of an augmented interpolation scheme.

Unified galaxy power spectrum measurements from 6dFGS, BOSS, and eBOSS

Florian Beutler et al.

Summary: Recent developments in galaxy redshift surveys have led to the proposal of a matrix-based analysis framework for galaxy power spectrum multipoles, providing deconvolved power spectrum results for several datasets. The use of deconvolved power spectrum multipoles allows for a data analysis independent of survey-specific aspects, such as the window function. This alternative analysis method has been shown to yield similar results to standard analysis in the case of the BOSS dataset, with various analysis components and a Python toolbox provided for convenience.

Cosmological parameters from the likelihood analysis of the galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum in real space

Andrea Oddo et al.

Summary: In this study, a joint likelihood analysis of the halo power spectrum and bispectrum in real space was conducted using a large set of numerical simulations and halo mock catalogs. Constraints on bias and cosmological parameters were derived, and a reference bias model dependent on seven parameters was selected based on the Deviance Information Criterion. This model accurately recovers three selected cosmological parameters even for extreme simulation volumes, demonstrating the importance of considering relations among bias parameters and full covariance estimation from mock catalogs.

Cosmological constraints from unWISE and Planck CMB lensing tomography

Alex Krolewski et al.

Summary: Recent lensing measurements at low redshifts suggest that the amplitude of lensing in the universe may be lower than predicted by the Lambda CDM model based on Planck CMB data. By analyzing the auto-and cross-correlation signal of unWISE galaxies and Planck CMB lensing maps, cosmological parameters at low redshifts have been inferred, showing tensions with the CMB predictions. The combination of blue, green, and red unWISE samples gives a value of S-8 = 0.784 +/- 0.015, consistent with other low-redshift lensing measurements and in tension with the CMB predictions from Planck.

Galaxy bias from forward models: linear and second-order bias of IllustrisTNG galaxies

Alexandre Barreira et al.

Summary: The study uses field-level forward models of galaxy clustering and EFT likelihood formalism to infer the relations between linear bias parameters (b(1), b(2), b(K2)) in self-consistently simulated galaxies. It finds that bias relations in total mass selected objects are broadly preserved in simulated galaxies selected by various characteristics, and shows good agreement with observed galaxy samples. The use of EFT likelihood also recovers sigma(8) values from different galaxy samples, demonstrating the potential of forward models in inferring cosmological information from galaxy data.

Optimizing large-scale structure data analysis with the theoretical error likelihood

Anton Chudaykin et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the impact of theoretical uncertainties in large-scale structure data analysis and how to incorporate these uncertainties in power spectrum likelihoods. The inclusion of theoretical errors has several advantages over the standard practice of using k(max) sharp momentum cut, providing reliable constraints with unbiased error bars. In realistic settings, the theoretical error likelihood yields essentially the same parameter constraints as the standard analysis, effectively optimizing the choice of k(max).

Fewer mocks and less noise: Reducing the dimensionality of cosmological observables with subspace projections

Oliver H. E. Philcox et al.

Summary: Creating accurate and low-noise covariance matrices is a challenge in modern cosmology, but a formalism presented in this study compresses observables into a small number of bins by minimizing log-likelihood error in a specific subspace. This leads to significant reduction in noise and allows for accurate parameter inference using fewer mocks. The method is validated with full-shape analyses of power spectra from BOSS DR12 mock catalogs, demonstrating the effectiveness of compressing observables into a lower-dimensional subspace for accurate cosmology studies.

Fundamental Plane of BOSS galaxies: correlations with galaxy properties, density field, and impact on RSD measurements

Sukhdeep Singh et al.

Summary: The study provides a detailed analysis of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies in SUSS-III BOSS LOWZ and CMASS galaxies. Significant redshift evolution of FP residuals is found, driven by surface brightness evolution, with strong correlations to galaxy properties and observational systematics. FP variations between central and satellite galaxies can be primarily explained by the correlation with galaxy luminosity, while cross-correlations of FP residuals with galaxy density field show dependence on galaxy properties and environment. Stronger correlations are observed in denser environments, with brighter and redder galaxies showing stronger correlation. Additionally, FP amplitude is found to be correlated with intrinsic alignments (IA) of galaxy shapes. No significant trends are observed in the impact of IA on the constraint of growth rate using redshift-space distortions (RSD), resulting in null detection of IA effects on RSD measurements.
