Political Accountability and Democratic Institutions: An Experimental Assessment

Jose Gabriel Castillo et al.

Summary: The study shows that democratically elected punishers have some impact on group outcomes in a public goods game with costly punishment, and their contributions are significant when facing repeated elections. The presence of political accountability provides different incentives, with a responsibility effect observed in higher contribution behavior, particularly under a democracy.

The effects of centralized power and institutional legitimacy on collective action

Jose Gabriel Castillo et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that there is no significant difference in the performance of exogenous versus endogenous delegation of sanctioning power in centralized power environments. Democratic schemes should not be taken for granted, as experimental evidence contradicts the common belief of a robust causal relationship between indirect democratic institutions, collective action, and economic outcomes.
