Spin-Induced Black Hole Scalarization in Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

Emanuele Berti et al.

Summary: In a certain class of models, black hole solutions with spin-induced scalarization can be constructed, which may violate the Kerr rotation bound. For the quadratic coupling considered, solutions with spin-induced scalarization are entropically favored over Kerr solutions.

Spin-Induced Scalarized Black Holes

Carlos A. R. Herdeiro et al.

Summary: A recently study shows that a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can experience a spin-induced linear tachyonic instability near a Kerr black hole, only when the dimensionless spin j is greater than or equal to 0.5. Results demonstrate that black hole solutions do have scalar hair once the spin-induced instability threshold is exceeded, supporting the idea of spin-induced black hole scalarization.

Dynamical Formation of Scalarized Black Holes and Neutron Stars through Stellar Core Collapse

Hao-Jui Kuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates for the first time the spherically symmetric fully nonlinear stellar core collapse to black holes and neutron stars in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories with spontaneous scalarization, showing rich possible paths to reach the scalarized state and interesting observational manifestations.

Dynamics of Spontaneous Black Hole Scalarization and Mergers in Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

William E. East et al.

Summary: Studied the dynamics of black holes in scalar Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories, finding different stability behaviors with different coupling parameters, and demonstrating how different choices for the subleading behavior of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling affect the final state.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

Causality in gravitational theories with second order equations of motion

Harvey S. Reall

Summary: This paper explores diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity coupled to matter, focusing on second order equations of motion. It delves into specific theories such as Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-scalar field theory, demonstrating how causality is governed by characteristic polynomials and identifying surfaces analogous to Fresnel surfaces in crystal optics. It also discusses the implications of Killing horizons and the zeroth law of black hole mechanics in these theories.
