Languages/languaging as world-making: the ontological bases of language
E. Demuro et al.
Summary: This article advocates for engaging with language ontologies to explore what language is or might be, rather than simply examining what we know about language. This approach has the potential to broaden research from studying different perspectives on the same assumed phenomenon (Language) to potentially observing multiple, different phenomena. The paper draws on research from anthropology and linguistic anthropology to situate language ontologies as worlded through linguistic practices, and explores three ontologies of language: language as object, language as practice, and language as assemblage.
