Dietary sphinganine is selectively assimilated by members of the mammalian gut microbiome

Min-Ting Lee et al.

Summary: This study utilized a Bioorthogonal labeling-Sort-Seq-Spec (BOSSS) approach to identify that gut Bacteroides bacteria are the predominant microorganisms responsible for assimilating dietary omega-alkynyl sphinganine (SAA), indicating an important role of sphingolipid-producing bacteria in processing dietary sphinganine. Comparative metabolomics revealed the conversion of SAA into a suite of dihydroceramides in the cecal microbiota of SAA-treated mice, consistent with metabolic activities of Bacteroides and Bifidobacterium. Additionally, other sphingolipid-interacting microbes were identified, highlighting the potential for further research on how these bacteria metabolize dietary sphingolipids.

Multi-mycotoxin occurrence in feed, metabolism and carry-over to animal-derived food products: A review

J. Tolosa et al.

Summary: The global demand for raw materials used in animal feed has been steadily increasing in recent years, with a frequent presence of mycotoxins in these materials raising concerns for human health. Research on the occurrence of mycotoxins in feed, their metabolism and transfer into animal source foodstuffs in the past decade indicates a significant issue that warrants attention.

Molecular and epigenetic modes of Fumonisin B1 mediated toxicity and carcinogenesis and detoxification strategies

Thilona Arumugam et al.

Summary: Fumonisin B-1 (FB1) is a natural contaminant in agricultural commodities that poses toxic and carcinogenic risks to animals and humans. Its toxicity is mainly mediated through disrupting sphingolipid metabolism, but oxidative stress, autophagy, and changes in immune response may also play a role. Alterations to the host epigenome may impact the toxic response to FB1.

Fumonisins and zearalenone fed at low levels can persist several days in the liver of turkeys and broiler chickens after exposure to the contaminated diet was stopped

D. Tardieu et al.

Summary: The study found that alpha-zearalanol (alpha-ZOL) and FB1 were the most abundant metabolites in the livers of turkeys and chickens, and their concentrations decreased over time. The concentration of FB1 in turkeys and chickens decreased linearly with time, while the concentration of alpha-ZOL decreased exponentially.

Summary: The poultry industry in sub-Saharan Africa is facing feed insecurity and safety issues, primarily due to contamination by mycotoxins. Aflatoxins are the most commonly quantified mycotoxins, with levels exceeding the EU regulatory limits of 20 µg/kg. Studies have also found co-occurrences of multiple mycotoxins.
