A classification scheme for identifying snowstorms affecting central New York State

Justin J. Hartnett

Summary: The Great Lakes region experiences high seasonal snowfall totals compared to similar latitudes, with lake-effect snowstorms being common. A classification scheme was developed to categorize different snowstorm types affecting the Lake Ontario basin, showing that lake-effect snowstorms were the most frequent and significant contributor to snowfall in the region. Direct cyclonic storms originating from northwestern Canada were less frequent but contributed less to seasonal snowfall compared to Nor'easters forming near the east coast of North America, which produced heavy widespread snowfall. The classification system proposed can be modified for global snow basins and may aid in future climate predictions.
