Hydration-controlled excited-state relaxation in protonated dopamine studied by cryogenic ion spectroscopy

Keisuke Hirata et al.

Summary: UV and IR spectra of protonated dopamine and its hydrated clusters were measured, showing different spectral features. Structure and excited state lifetime were determined through calculations, suggesting that water insertion inhibits excited state proton transfer.

Rethinking Ion Transport by Ionophores: Experimental and Computational Investigation of Single Water Hydration in Valinomycin-K+ Complexes

Eiko Sato et al.

Summary: Valinomycin is a macrocyclic ionophore that transports K+ across hydrophobic membranes. Hydration by a single water molecule can produce different conformers, some of which may hinder the transport of Valinomycin-K+, while others may enhance it. This study suggests a potential active participation of water in transport through the hydrophobic cellular membrane.

Revealing the role of excited state proton transfer (ESPT) in excited state hydrogen transfer (ESHT): systematic study in phenol-(NH3)n clusters

Christophe Jouvet et al.

Summary: Excited State Hydrogen Transfer (ESHT) is a new paradigm proposed in the late 20th century, which has become important in understanding excited state dynamics of aromatic molecules and re-defining photoinduced proton-transfer reactions. ESHT is also discussed in relation to photo-protection mechanisms of biomolecules such as DNA.
