The carbazole styryl based fluorescent molecular rotors (FMRs) with different chemical functionalities at C=C bond were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. These compounds exhibits bright solid state fluorescent and also exhibits aggregation induced emission (AIE) and fluorescent response towards viscosity. Apart from traditional p-(dialkylamino)-benzylidene malonitriles motifs, we have used carbazole styryl dyes as viscosity sensors. In this study we have discussed about the effect of chemical functionalities/substituents on the fluorescent properties, aggregation induced emission (AIE) and viscosity sensitivity. These compounds can find potential applications in biomedical field as fluorescent molecular rotors for viscosity determination.
