Coupling NiCo catalysts with carbon quantum dots on hematite photoanodes for highly efficient oxygen evolution

Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated highly efficient hole transfer from photoanodes to oxygen evolution catalysts by coupling NiCo catalyst with carbon quantum dots on alpha-Fe2O3 photoanodes, achieving one of the highest PEC activities and H2 generation rates. The carbon quantum dots acted as an efficient medium to promote hole transport and selectively tailor the electronic structure of surface-active sites, significantly enhancing surface charge separation and oxygen evolution process.

Probing of coupling effect induced plasmonic charge accumulation for water oxidation

Yuying Gao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that holes induced by plasmon coupling can accumulate significantly at the plasmonic Au nanoparticle dimer/TiO2 interface in the nanogap region, leading to a substantial acceleration of the water oxidation reaction. The local accumulated hole density is found to be proportional to the square of the local near-field enhancement, providing insights into the spatial distribution of charges in plasmonic systems and the role of local charge density at reaction sites in plasmonic photocatalysis.

Operando Analysis of Semiconductor Junctions in Multi-Layered Photocathodes for Solar Water Splitting by Impedance Spectroscopy

Wooseok Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the utility of EIS method for investigating multi-layered photocathodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting, providing valuable information about semiconductors and interfaces. The analysis of EIS data allows for obtaining details such as recombination processes, carrier lifetimes, and charge transfer time to the electrolyte. Additionally, the method is applied to different photocathodes to compare device characteristics under real operational conditions, showing significant differences in carrier lifetime between different materials.

Simultaneously boosting hydrogen production and ethanol upgrading using a highly-efficient hollow needle-like copper cobalt sulfide as a bifunctional electrocatalyst

Shuang Sheng et al.

Summary: The construction of hollow needle-like copper cobalt sulfide on carbon cloth as a bifunctional electrocatalyst shows superior catalytic activity and durability in ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The homemade ethanol-water electrolyser only demands a low voltage to deliver high current density, making it promising for energy-saving H-2 production and oxidation of ethanol into value-added acetic acid. This work may pave the way for the rational design of other electrocatalysts for efficient biomass oxidation reaction and relevant H-2 production applications.
