Aquatic Eddy Covariance: The Method and Its Contributions to Defining Oxygen and Carbon Fluxes in Marine Environments

Peter Berg et al.

Summary: Aquatic eddy covariance (AEC) is a noninvasive technique with high temporal resolution and large area coverage, which provides new insights and more accurate assessments of the functioning and metabolism of aquatic ecosystems. The studies using AEC have revealed that benthic oxygen exchange is more dynamic than previously recognized, and accurate mean values can only be obtained by integrating measurements over all timescales. The technique has also seen new developments in measuring air-water gas exchange and long-term deployments.

The Dissolution Rate of CaCO3 in the Ocean

Jess F. Adkins et al.

Summary: The dissolution of CaCO3 minerals in the ocean is a fundamental aspect of marine alkalinity and carbon cycling, but there is still disagreement regarding the relationship between dissolution rate and mineral saturation state. While freshwater dissolution of calcite has been well studied, a unified understanding of carbonate dissolution in the ocean is lacking, with disagreements between laboratory and field studies. This review proposes a new framework that considers surface energetics and seawater speciation to explain recent data and historical features.

Model of Early Diagenesis in the Upper Sediment with Adaptable complexity - MEDUSA (v. 2): a time-dependent biogeochemical sediment module for Earth system models, process analysis and teaching

Guy Munhoven

Summary: MEDUSA is a numerical model for simulating early diagenetic processes in surface sea-floor sediment. The model divides sediment into two zones, with chemical reactions occurring in the reactive mixed layer at the top, and solids and solutes being transported through different mechanisms. Solid material is gradually buried and preserved in a stack of layers forming a synthetic sediment core.

Impact of bottom trawling on sediment biogeochemistry: a modelling approach

Emil De Borger et al.

Summary: Bottom trawling in shelf seas can have significant impacts on benthic metabolism, leading to reduced organic carbon mineralization rates and changes in oxygen and nitrate concentrations in sediment. The effects vary depending on trawling frequency and sediment type, with physical organic carbon removal through trawl-induced resuspension of sediments identified as the main cause of the changes in the mineralization process.
