Dynamic passive sampling of hydrophobic organic compounds in surface seawater along the South Atlantic Ocean east-to-west transect and across the Black Sea

Jaromir Sobotka et al.

Summary: The study found that the spatial distribution of HOCs and emerging pollutants in the South Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea is influenced by riverine inputs, ocean currents, and atmospheric deposition from continental plumes. The observed concentration gradients indicate that eastern South Atlantic Ocean receives DDT from sources in South Africa, while the emissions of endosulfan originate in South America, and elevated HOC concentrations in the northwestern Black Sea are related to their discharge by rivers from the European continent.

Identification and quantification of plastic additives using pyrolysis-GC/MS: A review

Fleurine Akoueson et al.

Summary: Analysis of organic plastic additives associated with plastic polymers is a growing field, with multi-step pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometer providing a new method for identification and semi-quantification of OPAs. Various methods have been described in current studies, but there is no gold standard method yet. Future developments should focus on better characterizing the limits of the methods to determine which OPAs can be quantified and in which polymers this is feasible.
