Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Guidelines, Fair and Square

Robin Tyburski et al.

Summary: Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions play a fundamental role in energy transformation reactions and are increasingly important in catalysis and synthetic chemistry. The interplay between proton and electron transfer leads to a richness of reactivity, with various sequential and concerted mechanisms. Understanding and distinguishing between different PCET mechanisms is crucial for the design and optimization of reactions utilizing PCET.

Nanoparticle O-H Bond Dissociation Free Energies from Equilibrium Measurements of Cerium Oxide Colloids

Rishi G. Agarwal et al.

Summary: A novel equilibrium strategy is presented for measuring the hydrogen atom affinity of colloidal metal oxide nanoparticles, focusing on redox changes and H loadings of nanoceria. The measured CeO-H BDFEs span a range of 13 kcal mol(-1) and are related to the average redox state of the nanoceria colloid. The tunability of ceria BDFEs may explain its effectiveness in catalysis.

Photocatalytic Transfer Hydrogenation in Water: Insight into Mechanism and Catalyst Speciation

David M. Kaphan et al.

Summary: In this study, photoinduced transfer hydrogenation reactions using Cp*IrH organometallic catalysts were explored, focusing on aqueous ketone reduction catalyzed by [Cp*Ir(bpy)H][Cl]. Detailed mechanistic studies and kinetic analyses of the reduction of cyclohexanone revealed a unique photochemical reaction pathway to ketone reduction distinct from the traditional HER process.

Highly Selective Hydrogenation of C=C Bonds Catalyzed by a Rhodium Hydride

Yiting Gu et al.

Summary: Under mild conditions, Cp*Rh(2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl)H catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of the C=C bond in alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and many isolated double bonds. Mechanistic studies show that no radical intermediates are involved, and the catalyst is homogeneous, providing complementarity to existing protocols for similar hydrogenation processes.

Visible light enables catalytic formation of weak chemical bonds with molecular hydrogen

Yoonsu Park et al.

Summary: This study describes the direct photocatalytic synthesis of extremely weak element-hydrogen bonds of metal amido and metal imido complexes, as well as organic compounds with bond dissociation free energies as low as 31 kcal mol(-1). The key to this approach is the bifunctional behavior of the chromophoric iridium hydride photocatalyst, which enables the formation of weak chemical bonds near thermodynamic potential with no by-products. Photophysical and mechanistic studies corroborate radical-based reaction pathways and highlight the uniqueness of this photodriven approach in promoting new catalytic chemistry.
