Polarized Hydroxyapatite: New Insights and Future Perspectives Through Systematic Electrical Characterization at the Interface

Jordi Sans et al.

Summary: The design of hydroxyapatite (HAp) with customized electrical properties is of special interest for developing technological and biomedical applications with new improved functionalities. Polarized HAp, obtained by applying an external electric voltage at high temperature, has been shown as an alternative to doped-HAp. This work extensively characterizes polarized HAp using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and proposes a unified electrical equivalent circuit model to explain its properties. The study provides necessary insights into the polarization treatment and opens up a pathway for new applications based on dopant-free polarized HAp in biomedical and technological fields.

Controlled Anisotropic Growth of Hydroxyapatite by Additive-Free Hydrothermal Synthesis

Jordi Sans et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new additive-free synthetic route for controlling the shape and size of hydroxyapatite (HAp), based on the use of hydrothermal method and non-aqueous solvents. This method, using only organic solvents and pH control, can produce pure and crystalline HAp with controlled shape and size. It elucidates some key aspects of the crystal growth mechanism and allows the synthesis of HAp crystals with different and well-defined shapes and sizes in a reproducible way.
