Removal of Arsenic by Wheat Straw Biochar from Soil

Abhishek Kumar et al.

Summary: Biochar prepared from wheat straw at different pyrolysis temperatures showed smooth and porous surface with abundant functional groups. The maximum arsenic removal of 83.7% was achieved under optimized conditions. Various studies indicated the feasibility of arsenic removal through physisorption, chemisorption, ion exchange, and diffusion mechanisms.

Fire effects on the persistence of soil organic matter and long-term carbon storage

Adam F. A. Pellegrini et al.

Summary: Fire disturbances in ecosystems challenge the paradigm of frequent disturbances depleting soil organic matter carbon, as recent studies show that fires can increase soil organic matter stability and slow decomposition rates, offsetting aboveground biomass carbon losses.

Biochar-based nanocomposite from waste tea leaf for toxic dye removal: From facile fabrication to functional fitness

Wasim Akram Shaikh et al.

Summary: This study utilized discarded tea leaf waste to produce 'Tea leaf biochar' as the functional matrix for the fabrication of hybrid nanocomposite for the treatment of dye-laden wastewater. The composite material showed excellent adsorption efficiency for rhodamine B and Congo red dyes, following Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic models, indicating spontaneous and exothermic chemical adsorption on the heterogeneous surface. The mechanism of dye adsorption was complex, involving surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and H-bonding facilitated by the synergistic effects of tea leaf biochar and silver nanoparticles.

Contrasting effects of straw and biochar on microscale heterogeneity of soil O2 and pH: Implication for N2O emissions

Kun Zhu et al.

Summary: This study used planar optodes to continuously measure the microscale dynamics of O2 and pH in soil amended with straw and biochar. The results showed that the recalcitrant biochar could increase soil pH and maintain an oxic zone, whereas the addition of straw resulted in a decline in soil pH. The biochar treatment also reduced N2O emissions due to the high pH and oxic conditions, while straw induced microoxic conditions and enhanced N2O emissions. These findings provide insights into the microscale factors influencing N transformations and have implications for environmental monitoring.

Biochar improves soil physical characteristics and strengthens root architecture in Muscadine grape (Vitis rotundifolia L.)

Yuru Chang et al.

Summary: Biochar significantly enhanced soil physical properties by increasing water-holding capacity, reducing bulk density, and improving soil porosity. Furthermore, it strengthened root architecture by promoting root length, number of root forks, and crossings, ultimately enhancing root development in woody plants.

Biochar industry to circular economy

Qiang Hu et al.

Summary: Biochar, a by-product of waste biomass pyrolysis/gasification, has potential to reduce environmental impact, address climate change, and establish a circular economy. However, research on its benefits remains debated due to heterogeneity. To enable meaningful comparisons, an agreed international standard for production is necessary. This study analyzed four key uses of biochar and proposed guidelines for its properties in an environmentally friendly application context in Singapore.

Carbon loss from boreal forest wildfires offset by increased dominance of deciduous trees

Michelle C. Mack et al.

Summary: Climate warming in boreal forests is leading to more frequent wildfires burning deeply into organic soils, releasing stored carbon. In Alaskan boreal forests, shifts in dominant plant species due to severe fires can compensate for increased soil carbon combustion, resulting in a net increase in carbon storage by a factor of 5.
