Disentangling Internal and External Contributions to Atlantic Multidecadal Variability Over the Past Millennium

Shih-Wei Fang et al.

Summary: This study decomposes the Atlantic multidecadal variability into internal and external components using a multi-model ensemble, finding that the internal component is closely related to the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and dominates the fluctuations of AMV; while the external signal has limited impacts on AMOC.

An Updated Assessment of Near-Surface Temperature Change From 1850: The HadCRUT5 Data Set

C. P. Morice et al.

Summary: HadCRUT5 is a new version of a global surface temperature data set, incorporating sea-surface temperature and land near-surface air temperature measurements. Two variants are produced for different applications, with the combination of revised input data sets and statistical analysis resulting in greater warming of the global average over the entire record period.

Robust Inter-Hemispheric Asymmetry in the Response to Symmetric Volcanic Forcing in Model Large Ensembles

Andrew G. Pauling et al.

Summary: The climate response to volcanic eruptions in the twentieth century is challenging to separate from anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing and internal variability. The Pinatubo eruption in June 1991 resulted in asymmetric temperature and sea ice responses, with the Arctic experiencing the strongest cooling and sea ice expansion, while the Antarctic responses were weak. Despite the differing physical nature of the forcing, the Southern Hemisphere response to volcanic forcing is similar to the fast response to increased greenhouse gas concentrations.

The Influence of Stratospheric Soot and Sulfate Aerosols on the Northern Hemisphere Wintertime Atmospheric Circulation

Joshua Coupe et al.

Summary: The study explores the Northern Hemisphere wintertime circulation response to volcanic eruptions using climate models. It finds that in nuclear war simulations, stratospheric aerosol heating by soot plays a key role in enhancing the stratospheric polar vortex and the surface temperature response.

Cloud Feedbacks from CanESM2 to CanESM5.0 and their influence on climate sensitivity

John G. Virgin et al.

Summary: By comparing the forcing and feedbacks between CanESM2 and CanESM5, it was found that the main cause of increased climate sensitivity in CanESM5 is the changes in shortwave cloud feedbacks, particularly the positive feedback from low clouds across the equatorial Pacific, subtropical, and extratropical free troposphere cloud optical depth.

The unidentified eruption of 1809: a climatic cold case

Claudia Timmreck et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of the 1809 volcanic eruption on global climate, finding a significant drop in tropical temperatures and spatially heterogeneous response of Northern Hemisphere boreal summer temperatures. The post-volcanic surface NH summer temperature anomalies lie within the range of all the scenario simulations, with estimated VSSI between 12 and 19 Tg.
