Phenotypic heterogeneity in persisters: a novel 'hunker' theory of persistence

J. Urbaniec et al.

Summary: This review discusses antibiotic persistence, presents the "hunker" theory of persister cell formation based on intrinsic heterogeneity of bacterial growth and metabolism, and emphasizes the urgent need to develop effective anti-persister treatment regimes to combat antimicrobial resistance.

An open label, randomised controlled trial of rifapentine versus rifampicin based short course regimens for the treatment of latent tuberculosis in England: the HALT LTBI pilot study

J. Surey et al.

Summary: The pilot trial in the UK compared the effectiveness of weekly rifapentine/isoniazid regimen with daily rifampicin/isoniazid regimen in treating latent tuberculosis infection. The study found similar completion rates and adverse event profiles between the two regimens.

Behcet's disease with latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

Yan Shen et al.

Summary: Patients with Behcet's disease and latent tuberculosis infection have more severe clinical features, including oral ulcers, genital ulcers, and eye involvement. Rifampicin use in the LTBI group may be associated with liver damage in Behcet's disease patients.

Quantifying the rates of late reactivation tuberculosis: a systematic review

Katie D. Dale et al.

Summary: The study included 110 studies divided into four methodological groups, focusing on tuberculosis reactivation occurring more than 2 years after infection. Findings showed that in infected, untreated cohorts, tuberculosis rates declined to approximately 200 cases per 100,000 person-years by the fifth year after conversion, and dropped to less than 100 cases per 100,000 person-years beyond 10 years, with uncertainty due to age and reinfection risks.

Hyung Woo Kim et al.

Summary: The Korean government launched an unprecedentedly large-scaled latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening project in 2017, with a participation rate of 44.8%. Workers in daycare centers and kindergartens showed high participation rates. In the IGRA cohort, most participants were of working age and about three-quarters were female.
