A review of the carotid artery and facial nerve canal systems in extant turtles

Yann Rollot et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the cranial circulation and innervation systems of turtles using CT scans on a broad set of extant turtles. It reveals the absence of specific arterial systems in certain turtle species and highlights the osteological correlates for the location of the mandibular artery. The results have the potential to create new phylogenetic characters and investigate the circulation systems of fossil turtle taxa, ultimately shedding light on the evolution of turtle circulation systems and clarifying unresolved relationships between fossil turtle clades.

Filling of sedimentary basins and the birth of large rivers: The lower Danube network in the Dacian Basin, Romania

Csaba Krersek et al.

Summary: Large rivers typically form in the final phase of evolution of sedimentary basins, influenced by factors such as tectonics, sediment supply, and accommodation. Using the Danube River in the Carpathians foreland basin as a case study, this paper discusses the controlling factors that lead to the birth of large, continental-scale rivers.

Ancient mitogenomics elucidates diversity of extinct West Indian tortoises

Christian Kehlmaier et al.

Summary: The study found that the genetic divergences of extinct tortoises from the Bahamas were shallow, and the divergence among different islands began at a similar time as the Galapagos tortoises. The genetic differentiation within the tortoises of the Bahamas and the Galapagos Islands is younger compared to other congeneric pairs of tortoise species.

Neuroanatomy of the European uppermost Cretaceous stem turtle Kallokibotion bajazidi

Marcos Martin-Jimenez et al.

Summary: Kallokibotion bajazidi is one of the few stem turtles identified in the Upper Cretaceous of Europe, described almost a century ago by Franz Nopcsa. Recent studies have significantly improved knowledge about this taxon, confirming its attribution to a stem turtle and proposing it as the sister taxon of the crown Testudines.
