A synthetic view of rainfall intensification in the West African Sahel

G. Chagnaud et al.

Summary: The West African Sahel has been experiencing an increase in extreme rainfall, posing challenges for decision-makers in adapting to a changing climate. The study reveals a significant region-wide increase in extreme rainfall, accompanied by changes in both intensity and variability. Furthermore, the research shows that the increase in annual maxima of daily rainfall is primarily due to stronger storm intensities rather than more frequent storm occurrences.

How might climate change affect river flows across West Africa?

Ponnambalam Rameshwaran et al.

Summary: The study indicates that future changes in river flows in West Africa are highly variable spatially, with projected decreases in western regions (e.g. Senegal) and increases in eastern regions (e.g. Chad) by 2050s. The projected reductions in river flows in the western Sahel could lead to future droughts and water shortages, while increases in the eastern Sahel may result in more frequent floods.

Projected future daily characteristics of African precipitation based on global (CMIP5, CMIP6) and regional (CORDEX, CORDEX-CORE) climate models

Alessandro Dosio et al.

Summary: This study provides an assessment of future daily characteristics of African precipitation by comparing large ensembles of global and regional climate models, highlighting the similarities and inconsistencies between them. While results for some precipitation characteristics are consistent among ensembles, inconsistencies exist between global and regional models in projecting changes in specific regions and seasons. The study emphasizes the importance of a process-based evaluation of mechanisms controlling precipitation over the region.

Streamflow stationarity in a changing world

Yuting Yang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in catchments with minimal human disturbance, long-term annual streamflow tends to remain stationary in most cases, while in catchments with substantial human interventions, only a small percentage exhibit stationary flow. This underscores the significant impact of human activities on freshwater systems.

Hydrological cycle and water resources in a changing world: A review

Dawen Yang et al.

Summary: Water is a fundamental natural resource that supports life, ecosystems, and human society. Studying the water cycle is crucial for sustainable development, particularly in the context of global climate change. Better understanding the impacts of climate change and human activities on hydrological processes and water resources across temporal and spatial scales is essential. Systematic approaches for large basin studies and interdisciplinary research are needed to address the joint impacts of these factors and promote sustainable development in line with the United Nations' goals.

Uncertainty of gridded precipitation and temperature reference datasets in climate change impact studies

Mostafa Tarek et al.

Summary: A study compared nine precipitation and two temperature datasets over 1145 African catchments to evaluate the dataset uncertainty contribution to the results of climate change studies. Results showed that four precipitation datasets, namely MSWEP, CHIRPS, PERSIANN, and ERAS, outperformed the others for most catchments, highlighting the importance of selecting a reference dataset in climate change impact studies.

Future changes in annual, seasonal and monthly runoff signatures in contrasting Alpine catchments in Austria

Sarah Hanus et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of climate change on runoff patterns in six Alpine catchments in Austria using hydrological and climate models. The results show that high-elevation catchments will experience earlier annual maximum flows and longer potential flood seasons. Additionally, low-elevation catchments may see an increase in flow magnitude under RCP4.5.
