Variability of bio-optical properties in nearshore waters of the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence: Absorption and backscattering coefficients

Carlos A. S. Araujo et al.

Summary: The inherent optical properties and optically significant constituents in the nearshore zones of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence were investigated. The study provided a detailed characterization of dissolved organic matter and particulate matter, and revealed the dominant control processes and seasonal variations. The findings contribute to the development of remote sensing algorithms for monitoring biogeochemically relevant constituents in the water.

Spectral range within global aCDOMY(440) algorithms for oceanic, coastal, and inland waters with application to airborne measurements

Henry F. Houskeeper et al.

Summary: The study focused on the optically active component of dissolved organic material in aquatic ecosystems, or colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and explored remote sensing techniques for characterizing this parameter and retrieving chlorophyll a. Results demonstrated that end-member analysis (EMA) is a useful and robust approach for CDOM remote sensing in coastal and inland waters, providing increased accuracy and addressing challenges posed by optical complexity and bottom reflectance.

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter in inland waters: Present knowledge and future challenges

Yunlin Zhang et al.

Summary: Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is crucial in the biogeochemical cycle of aquatic ecosystems. Recent studies have focused on characterizing CDOM, mapping its distribution through remote sensing, and investigating the biogeochemical processes involved. Watershed-related processes play a key role in CDOM dynamics, with photochemical degradation and microbial decomposition being significant removal mechanisms.

Atmospheric correction of Sentinel-3/OLCI data for mapping of suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll-a concentration in Belgian turbid coastal waters

Quinten Vanhellemont et al.

Summary: Different atmospheric correction algorithms for OLCI on Sentinel-3 were evaluated for retrieval of water-leaving radiance reflectance, chlorophyll-a concentration, and turbidity in turbid coastal waters. ACOLITE and L2-WFR showed the best performance in the 442-681 nm bands, while algorithms assuming a water reflectance model, like POLYMER and C2RCC, were less suitable for processing imagery over turbid coastal waters.

ACIX-Aqua: A global assessment of atmospheric correction methods for Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 over lakes, rivers, and coastal waters

Nima Pahlevan et al.

Summary: Atmospheric correction over inland and coastal waters remains a challenge in aquatic remote sensing, and the ACIX-Aqua project evaluated 8 AC processors. Data from the Community Validation Database and AERONET-OC showed differing performance of AC processors in different aquatic environments, highlighting the need for improving atmospheric correction for better quality downstream products in freshwater and coastal ecosystems.

From coast to coast to coast: ecology and management of seagrass ecosystems across Canada

Grace E. P. Murphy et al.

Summary: Seagrass meadows, particularly eelgrass, are highly productive and diverse marine ecosystems in Canada, but face varying environmental conditions and human impacts across different regions. Despite similarities in eelgrass life history, significant differences exist in environmental conditions and human activities, highlighting the need for tailored management and conservation efforts.
