Size-controllable synthesis of dendritic porous silica as reinforcing fillers for dental composites

Hongyan Chen et al.

Summary: Hierarchical porous silica particles with center-radial hierarchical pores and controllable size ranging from 75 to 1000 nm were synthesized and utilized in dental composites, showing superior reinforcing effect and cytocompatibility. The particle size and morphology significantly influence the mechanical properties of composite materials, with DPS-500 particles exhibiting the highest improvements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, compressive strength, and work of fracture compared to DPS-75 filled composite.

Summary: A novel PMMA-based resin for SLA 3D-printing was developed in this study by mixing MMA, EGDMA, and PMMA powder, with optimal composition determined as 30% PMMA, 56% EGDMA, 14% MMA. The resin showed comparable or higher mechanical properties to commercial resins and acceptable physicochemical properties and cytotoxicity for oral environment use, making it a potential candidate material for dental applications.

Behaviour of PMMA Resin Composites Incorporated with Nanoparticles or Fibre following Prolonged Water Storage

Abdulaziz Alhotan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of water sorption and hygroscopic expansion in PMMA denture base acrylics reinforced with nanoparticles or fibre compared to non-reinforced PMMA. The results showed that ZrO2 nanoparticles and E-glass fibres did not increase water solubility/sorption, while TiO2 did significantly increase water sorption level.

Flexural Strength and Hardness of Filler-Reinforced PMMA Targeted for Denture Base Application

Abdulaziz Alhotan et al.

Summary: The flexural strength and surface hardness of heat-cured PMMA were significantly improved by adding ZrO2 nanoparticles, TiO2 nanoparticles, and E-glass fibre. The optimal filler concentrations for enhancing flexural strength were found to be between 3-5% ZrO2, 1.5% TiO2, and 3-7% E-glass fibre. Fillers at a concentration of 3 wt.% and above significantly improved hardness for all composites.

Preparation, Thermal, and Thermo-Mechanical Characterization of Polymeric Blends Based on Di(meth)acrylate Monomers

Krystyna Wnuczek et al.

Summary: This study focused on the preparation and thermo-mechanical characteristics of polymeric blends based on di(meth)acrylates monomers, using Bisphenol A glycerolate diacrylate (BPA.GDA) or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinking monomers. The copolymers were confirmed by ATR/FT-IR spectroscopy, and their thermal and mechanical properties were analyzed using DSC, TG/DTG, and DMA. The influence of different amounts of a modifying soluble additive (PC) on the physicochemical properties was discussed in detail, along with evaluations of surface properties using AFM.

Assessing Fracture Toughness and Impact Strength of PMMA Reinforced with Nano-Particles and Fibre as Advanced Denture Base Materials

Abdulaziz Alhotan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of E-glass fibre, ZrO2, and TiO2 nanoparticles on the fracture toughness and impact strength of PMMA denture base. Results showed that ZrO2, TiO2, and E-glass fibre reinforcements significantly improved fracture toughness and impact strength in PMMA, with 3 wt.% ZrO2 showing the highest fracture toughness. E-glass fibres were particularly effective in enhancing impact strength, while ZrO2 or TiO2 nanoparticles did not have a significant impact on impact strength in comparison to the control group.
