Summary: Losses are common in nature and can inhibit optical processes, but manipulating them can be crucial for controlling photon dynamics. By introducing a transient loss boundary, the authors were able to create a 'photon brake' mechanism to adjust photon dissipation and manipulate the behavior of cavity photons. This work has potential applications in quantum optics, low-loss waveguides and ultrafast beam scanning devices.
