Spray-drying of casein/pectin bioconjugate microcapsules containing grape (Vitis labrusca) by-product extract

Jessica Bassetto Carra et al.

Summary: Novel microcapsules containing grape peel by-product extract were successfully obtained using complex coacervation and spray-drying. Factors such as feed rate, drying temperature, and airflow rate were found to influence the microencapsulation process. The interaction between polyphenols in the extract and polymers played a key role in enhancing thermal stability and reducing material loss during the spray-drying process.

Summary: This study utilized a central composite design approach to investigate the sensitivity of yield and particle size of spray-dried pectin microparticles towards different input parameters. By optimizing the spray drying conditions, a maximum yield was achieved with relatively consistent particle size range. The yield prediction model was validated using octreotide acetate as a representative peptide, showing changes in surface roughness and melting enthalpy of pectin microparticles.

The preparation, characterization and antibacterial properties of chitosan/pectin silver nanoparticle films

Gulen Oytun Akalin et al.

Summary: In recent years, the production of edible films using natural biodegradable polymers, with the addition of antibacterial materials to improve product shelf life and quality, has increased. Silver nanoparticle films based on chitosan and chitosan/pectin were synthesized, showing eco-friendly and antibacterial properties. The presence of pectin improved thermal stability and mechanical properties, and the films exhibited long-lasting antibacterial activity against E.coli compared to chitosan-based films.

Chitosan induces jasmonic acid production leading to resistance of ripened fruit against Botrytis cinerea infection

Zhang Peian et al.

Summary: Chitosan plays a key role in plant resistance to Botrytis infection, inhibiting its growth and inducing defense-related genes in ripened fruits. It increases phenolic compounds, modulates oxidative stress, and induces JA production. Chitosan upregulates specific proteins and interactions, ultimately protecting fruit quality against Botrytis through JA signaling pathways.

Polymeric Microparticles of Calcium Pectinate Containing Urea for Slow Release in Ruminant Diet

Myrla Melo et al.

Summary: Microencapsulated urea formulations with different urea concentrations were used in ruminant feeding to control the release rate of ammonia in the rumen, improving nitrogen utilization and reducing the risk of ruminant intoxication. The degradation kinetics demonstrated that controlled release from microencapsulated systems significantly decreased the release rate compared to free urea. Additionally, blood serum concentrations of certain metabolites were higher in sheep receiving microencapsulated urea, with the MPec2 system being recommended for its more controlled core release.
