Light-fueled rapid macroscopic motion of a green fluorescent organic crystal

Prasenjit Giri et al.

Summary: The new green fluorescent organic crystal displays various macroscopic responses under UV light, with shape deformation and actuation controlled by specific parts of the crystal and the direction of illumination. Experimental evidence suggests that the light-fueled macroscopic actuation of the E-ArF2 crystal is rooted in the combined effect of E-to-Z isomerization and [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction in the solid state. A general mechanistic model of the actuation is proposed based on the experimental findings.

Fluorine as a robust balancer for tuning the reactivity of topo-photoreactions of chalcones and the photomechanical effects of molecular crystals

Yuanhong Shu et al.

Summary: By synthesizing fluorine-free chalcones and chalcones with varying numbers of fluorine atoms, researchers found that the reactivity of photo-induced [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions in crystals could be tuned by fluorine. The introduction of fluorine increased molecular planarity and strategically positioned reactive double bonds in crystal lattices. This led to stereospecific [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions, resulting in various photomechanical behaviors in chalcone-based molecular crystals. The more efficient photo-induced reactions in crystalline states caused significant motions of the molecular crystals, demonstrating the potential of crystal engineering for fabricating mechanically responsive crystalline materials.

Bridging photochemistry and photomechanics with NMR crystallography: the molecular basis for the macroscopic expansion of an anthracene ester nanorod

Kevin R. Chalek et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates how a novel combination of techniques including ensemble oriented-crystal solid-state NMR, X-ray diffraction, and first principles computational modeling can establish the atomic-resolution mechanism for the photomechanical response of crystals composed of photoreactive molecules. The model constructed based on these techniques accurately predicts the elongation of the crystal nanorods. Understanding how molecular-level photochemistry generates mechanical displacements allows for the tuning of the expansion of the nanorods by controlling the initial orientation of the unit cell, offering new insights into the relationship between atomic-level structural rearrangement and mechanical response in nanostructured samples.
