Serum IL-36 cytokines levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and their association with obesity, insulin resistance, and inflammation

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The study found that T2DM patients had higher levels of serum IL-36 alpha and IL-36 gamma, but lower levels of IL-36Ra. Additionally, the levels of inflammatory cytokines were directly proportional to inflammation and blood lipid levels. This suggests that IL-36 cytokines may be a new target for the diagnosis or treatment of T2DM.

Pro-inflammatory cytokine profile is present in the serum of Mexican patients with different stages of diabetic retinopathy secondary to type 2 diabetes

Jonathan Uriel Quevedo-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with diabetes and DR had higher levels of IL-6, IL-12, IL-17a, and TNF alpha in their serum compared to healthy controls. TNF alpha showed a higher concentration in PDR group compared to healthy controls, NDR, and NPDR subjects. There was a positive correlation between the presence and severity of DR with clinical parameters and the concentration of serum cytokines IL-6 and TNF alpha.

Exercise and Adipose Tissue Immunity: Outrunning Inflammation

Nathan C. Winn et al.

Summary: Chronic inflammation is considered a precipitating factor and possibly an underlying cause of many noncommunicable diseases. Obesity, affecting more than 650 million people worldwide, is the most common chronic inflammatory condition, with visceral adiposity thought to be the major inflammatory hub linking obesity and chronic disease.

Relationships of the Trace Elements Zinc and Magnesium With Diabetic Nephropathy-Associated Renal Functional Damage in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Jianan Feng et al.

Summary: Zinc and magnesium are essential trace elements in humans, and their deficiency may be associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. This study found that serum concentrations of zinc and magnesium were significantly lower in patients with T2DM and DN, while levels of IL-6 and IL-8 increased with the progression of renal functional damage associated with DN. Additionally, serum zinc concentration was independently protective against DN in patients with T2DM, suggesting a potential role of hypozincemia in aggravating inflammation and renal damage.

IL-17 is expressed on beta and alpha cells of donors with type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Sakthi Rajendran et al.

Summary: IL-17 is expressed in the islets of donors with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, originating from both beta and alpha cells with CD45(+) cells not being a major source. Expression of IL-17 is reduced in islets of non-diabetic donors, auto-antibody positive donors, and in insulin-deficient islets of donors with type 1 diabetes. Further studies are needed to understand the role of IL-17 in the context of metabolic and immune stress in beta cells.

Summary: The study revealed that patients with COPD combined with T2DM had significantly increased levels of Th17 and related cytokines in peripheral blood, while Treg levels were significantly decreased, indicating a potential role of Th17/Treg imbalance in the formation and progression of COPD combined with T2DM.
