Long-Term Ozone Exposure and Small Airway Dysfunction The China Pulmonary Health (CPH) Study

Yue Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between long-term ozone exposure and adult lung function in China. It found independent associations of long-term ozone exposure with impaired small airway function and higher risks of small airway dysfunction, while the associations with airflow obstruction were weak. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) appeared to be more vulnerable.

Air Pollution-An Overlooked Risk Factor for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Sebastian Majewski et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a major environmental risk to health and can lead to premature death globally. Despite limited research, air pollution is considered an underrecognized risk factor for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Pollutant-sex specific differences in respiratory hospitalization and mortality risk attributable to short-term exposure to ambient air pollution

Hwashin Hyun Shin et al.

Summary: This study compared the acute respiratory-related hospitalization and mortality associated with short-term exposure to three ambient air pollutants in different lag-days. The results showed significant associations between the pollutants and respiratory health outcomes, with sex-specific differences being more pronounced. Further studies are needed to understand the pollutant-sex specific disparities.

Ambient air pollution exposure and chronic bronchitis in the Lifelines cohort

Dany Doiron et al.

Summary: This study is the largest analysis to date examining the relationship between ambient air pollution and chronic bronchitis. The results indicate that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and black carbon (BC) air pollution are associated with increased odds of prevalent and incident chronic bronchitis.

Characteristics and sources of hourly elements in PM10 and PM2.5 during wintertime in Beijing

Pragati Rai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and sources of ambient particle elements in urban Beijing during November and December 2017, using an online multi-element analyzer. The results showed that biomass burning, coal combustion, secondary sulfate, industry, non-exhaust traffic, and dust are the main sources influencing PM10 and PM2.5, with varying contributions during different seasons and haze events.

Exposure to PM2.5 is a risk factor for acute exacerbation of surgically diagnosed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: a case-control study

Masahiro Tahara et al.

Summary: Short-term exposure to fine particulate matter PM2.5 and nitric oxide (NO) may increase the risk of acute exacerbation in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, with a possible exposure-risk time window of 1-2 months before the exacerbation. Further research is needed to investigate the novel findings regarding NO exposure and AE-IPF.
