A Detection of Convectively Induced Turbulence Using in Situ Aircraft and Radar Spectral Width Data

Jung-Hoon Kim et al.

Summary: On October 28, 2018, a commercial aircraft departing from Seoul to Jeju Island encountered convectively induced turbulence (CIT) near Seoul. The intensity of the CIT was estimated using aircraft and radar observations, and the CIT event was accurately forecasted using the Weather and Research Forecast (WRF) model.

Improving Numerical Weather Prediction-Based Near-Cloud Aviation Turbulence Forecasts by Diagnosing Convective Gravity Wave Breaking

Soo-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: The near-cloud turbulence (NCT) diagnostics show better accuracy in detecting turbulence near convection, especially in predicting localized turbulence events. Adding NCT diagnostics to the conventional clear air turbulence (CAT) diagnostics can improve aviation turbulence forecasting performance, with the best performance observed in summertime.

Characteristics of Energy Dissipation Rate Observed from the High-Frequency Sonic Anemometer at Boseong, South Korea

Jeonghoe Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of low-level turbulence at the Boseong Meteorological Observatory in South Korea, focusing on eddy dissipation rate (EDR) analysis. Results showed variation in EDR values based on different heights and seasons. The distribution of EDR was found to be consistent across different atmospheric stability conditions, with minor deviations at lower levels.
