Hydroboration reactions using transition metal borane and borate complexes: an overview

Koushik Saha et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been significant progress in the chemistry of transition metal borane and borate complexes, particularly in their application in hydrofunctionalisation reactions. This article highlights the important role of these complexes in the hydroboration/hydrosilylation/hydroamination of unsaturated organic species and the isolation of various boron-containing transition metal complexes. Both catalysed and uncatalysed hydroboration reactions using these complexes have shown great potential. Understanding the electronic and steric properties of the borane/borate ligands has facilitated the synthesis of transition metal complexes for use in hydroboration reactions.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Phosphinidenide Complexes as Hydroboration Catalysts

Jayeeta Bhattacharjee et al.

Summary: The reactions of N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene adducts with dinuclear ruthenium and osmium complexes resulted in the formation of half-sandwich complexes with different geometries. The ruthenium complex showed high activity in the hydroboration of various substrates under mild reaction conditions. Preliminary mechanistic and kinetic studies suggested the formation of a monohydride complex as the catalytically active species.

Summary: The study demonstrates highly efficient and selective hydroboration of nitriles and carbodiimides using n-BuLi as a catalyst with pinacolborane. The reaction shows good functional group tolerance and can be carried out solvent-free under mild conditions. A possible mechanistic pathway for the n-BuLi catalyzed hydroboration of nitriles with HBpin is proposed.

Manganese-Catalyzed Hydroborations with Broad Scope

Pradip Ghosh et al.

Summary: The reductive transformations of easily available oxidized matter play a crucial role in synthetic manipulation and chemical valorization. The use of liquid reducing agents and simple setups in catalytic hydrofunctionalization adds to its practicality. Metal-catalyzed hydroborations offer a productive platform for reductive valorizations of stable C=X electrophiles, as demonstrated in this study with the pre-catalyst Mn(hmds)(2) for the reduction of various functional groups under mild conditions, including successful depolymerizations.

Hydroboration of Nitriles, Esters, and Carbonates Catalyzed by Simple Earth-Abundant Metal Triflate Salts

Ranjeesh Thenarukandiyil et al.

Summary: Earth-abundant metals have become increasingly important in homogeneous catalysis, particularly in the hydroboration reactions of challenging substrates like nitriles, carbonates, and esters. The use of manganese(II) triflate salt in combination with potassium tert-butoxide and pinacolborane enables efficient hydroboration of these substrates with near quantitative yields in less than three hours at room temperature, showcasing a simple and effective methodology for these transformations. Further studies indicate that other earth-abundant metal triflate salts can also facilitate this reaction, expanding the scope of this catalytic process.
