Decoupling natural and man-made impacts on the morphologic and sedimentologic changes in the tidal flats, Saemangeum area, west coast of Korea: Implications for benthic ecosystem stability

Dohyeong Kim et al.

Summary: The research found that both natural and anthropogenic influences affect the morphological changes of tidal flats near the Saemangeum dike on the west coast of Korea. Man-made activities have led to overall erosion despite seasonal sedimentation patterns. The consequences include sustained erosion caused by the dike, heavy rainfalls in summer promoting erosion, and mud deposition from intensive dredging activity affecting sedimentology and benthic community stability.

Towards ecosystem service assessment: Developing biophysical indicators for forest ecosystem services

Andre Tiemann et al.

Summary: Forests play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and providing ecosystem services. However, European forests are currently facing deforestation, fragmentation, and conversion due to human impact and climate change. This article aims to develop a systematic approach for evaluating forest ecosystem services by proposing biophysical indicators. The authors also promote the use of forest function mapping as a planning tool and propose indicators for several ecosystem services, such as drinking water supply, timber provision, and climate regulation.

Trophic mediation and ecosystem stability: An assessment using qualitative network models

Delphi F. L. Ward et al.

Summary: Non-trophic interactions, such as the production of DMS by phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean ecosystem, can play a crucial role in community stability by attracting predators and releasing nutrients that fertilize the water column. Modelling studies show that uncertainties in these interactions can significantly impact stability, with factors like phytoplankton competition, DMS production and predator attraction to DMS being key determinants of community stability. Incorporating DMS-mediated feedbacks into larger networks can have a moderate impact on stability characteristics and alter vulnerability to perturbation at different trophic levels.

Evaluation of ecosystem stability against climate changes via satellite data in the eastern sandy area of northern China

Wenping Kang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the stability of the main sandy land regions in Northern China by combining time-series Net Primary Productivity (NPP) data and the AutoRegression (ARx) model. The results show strong correlations among stability metrics, such as a significant negative correlation between resilience and resistance. The unstable low or moderate-cover grassland and slightly desertified area require more attention to meet the challenges of more intense climate extremes in the future.

Impacts of reclamation derived land use changes on ecosystem services in a typical gulf of eastern China: A case study of Hangzhou bay

Peng Tian et al.

Summary: Reclamation activities in Hangzhou Bay have significant impacts on ecosystem services, with increases in water yield and carbon storage, but decreases in soil retention, habitat quality, and nitrogen export. The trade-off relationship of ecosystem services is mainly between carbon storage, nitrogen export, and water yield, as well as between habitat quality, water yield, and nitrogen export. The intensification of reclamation activities has led to shoreline shrinkage and morphology complexity, highlighting the need for coordinated development of the ecosystem and social economy in the area.

Ecological stability evaluation of tidal flat in coastal estuary: A case study of Liaohe estuary wetland, China

Haifu Li et al.

Summary: The study conducted at the tidal flat of the Liaohe Estuary Wetland established a comprehensive evaluation index of tidal flat ecological stability (ECO-CSI) and identified the driving factors and threshold values affecting the stability of the tidal flat. Human activities were found to be the major driving factors impacting the ecological stability of the tidal flat, while natural factors such as sediment discharge and precipitation played key roles in maintaining material supply. The study emphasized the importance of minimizing unreasonable human development activities to improve the stability of the tidal flat and ensure ecological security for the overall stability of the estuary wetland ecosystem.

Quantifying the spatiotemporal characteristics of multi-dimensional karst ecosystem stability with Landsat time series in southwest China

Zhi Huang et al.

Summary: The study quantified ecosystem stability in a karst peak cluster depression region in southwest China using Landsat time series. Results showed that 87.97% of the area experienced disturbance in the past 31 years, with the majority of major events occurring in 2004 in northeast and mid-west Guangxi. Only 0.03% of pixels had high resistance, while a large part of the study area showed low resilience, with 72.95% of pixels having a low recovery rate and 39.27% able to be restored to their original state after disturbance. Correlations between different stability indicators were weakly correlated or uncorrelated, suggesting the need for a multi-dimensional evaluation of ecosystem stability influenced by disturbance intensities.

Assessment of ecosystem resilience in Central Asia

Jingxiu Qin et al.

Summary: Climate change has a profound impact on ecosystem stability, with the ecosystem in Central Asia showing low resilience and resistance to short-term climate change. The relationship between resilience, resistance, and vegetation cover is nonlinear, and an imbalance in tree density can compromise ecosystem stability. Ecologically fragile areas are mainly found in transition zones between vegetation and non-vegetation.

Are we contaminating our samples? A preliminary study to investigate procedural contamination during field sampling and processing for microplastic and anthropogenic microparticles

C. Gwinnett et al.

Summary: Methods for sampling and analysing microplastics and microfibers in water samples have improved over the years, but techniques for reducing procedural contamination still need further development. Procedural contamination accounted for a significant portion of the total microplastics and microfibers found in samples, with crew clothing identified as a predominant source of contamination. Recommendations for anti-contamination protocols were made based on the study findings.

Trend assessment of the watershed health based on DPSIR framework

Jamal Mosaffaie et al.

Summary: The study revealed that except for the S index, all other indices showed an ascending trend during the study period. The slopes of D, P, S, I, and R indices were 0.08, 0.05, -0.05, 0.02, and 0.04, respectively. This indicates that the health of the Gorganroud watershed is deteriorating over time due to socioeconomic activities and related pressures. Despite some practical measures as responses, they are inadequate and not integrated.
