Hydrodynamic interventions and measurement protocols to quantify and mitigate power overshoot in microbial fuel cells using microfluidics

Mehran Abbaszadeh Amirdehi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the issue of power overshoot in underperforming microbial fuel cells (MFCs) using a microfluidic approach. By implementing two different acclimation methods, the power overshoot phenomenon was successfully eliminated, resulting in stable power and current density measurements.

A microfluidic approach for development of hybrid collagen-chitosan extracellular matrix-like membranes for on-chip cell cultures

Erica Rosella et al.

Summary: This study presents a microfluidic platform for synthesizing biomembranes and investigating their role as extracellular matrix supports. Different flow conditions during gelation process affect key properties of biomembranes such as width, uniformity, and swelling ratio depending on the biopolymer material used. Cell viability studies on seeded fibroblasts demonstrate the potential for biological applications.

Using an anion exchange membrane for effective hydroxide ion transport enables high power densities in microbial fuel cells

Ruggero Rossi et al.

Summary: High current densities achieved by bioanodes in electrochemical cells have not translated into higher power densities in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) until now. This study demonstrates that the critical factor for boosting power generation in MFCs is the transfer of OH- ions from the cathode to the bioanode. The results show that using an anion exchange membrane (AEM) in MFCs significantly increases power density compared to using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) or non-ion selective ultrafiltration membrane (UFM).

Continuous Flow Microbial Flow Cell with an Anion Exchange Membrane for Treating Low Conductivity and Poorly Buffered Wastewater

Ruggero Rossi et al.

Summary: The use of a novel continuous flow MFC structure with thin flow channels and anion exchange membranes (AEM) has successfully increased the power density of wastewater-fed microbial fuel cells. By reducing solution resistance and facilitating hydroxide ion transport, the MFC exhibited higher power density in artificial wastewater with low buffer capacity.

Stainless steel corrosion via direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer by Geobacter species

Hai-Yan Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the mechanism of microbial corrosion of stainless steel is significantly different from that of pure iron. Unlike in the corrosion of pure iron, H-2 is not abiotically produced from stainless steel during microbial corrosion, and direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer is a feasible route for stainless steel corrosion.
