Summary: The presence of alpha-solasonine and alpha-solamargine in potato leaf extracts corresponded to the high phytotoxic potential of the extracts. Among the differentially expressed genes between potato leaf bulks with high and low phytotoxic potential, the most upregulated transcripts in the sample of high phytotoxic potential were anthocyanin 5-aromatic acyltransferase-like and subtilisin-like protease. The most downregulated genes were carbonic anhydrase chloroplastic-like and miraculin-like.

Potato Juice, a Starch Industry Waste, as a Cost-Effective Medium for the Biosynthesis of Bacterial Cellulose

Daria Ciecholewska-Jusko et al.

Summary: This study validated the use of potato tuber juice (PJ) as a resource for producing bacterial cellulose (BC) with properties comparable to conventional commercial medium, showing its potential for significant valorization of waste products in the starch industry. The BC obtained from PJ exhibited no significant differences in properties or cytotoxicity compared to control BC, making it a promising and cost-effective option for wider applications in biomedicine.

Timing of short period water stress determines potato plant growth, yield and tuber quality

Cameron Wagg et al.

Summary: Short periods of water deficit have negative impacts on potato vegetative growth and tuber yield and quality, while short periods of water excess have slightly positive impacts. The most sensitive periods to water deficit are the vegetative and tuberization stages, with mostly no significant differences between different growth stages for water excess. The study confirms the benefits of supplemental irrigation and suggests strategic use of water during critical growth stages to maximize these benefits in water-limited conditions.
