Self-similar mesocrystals form via interface-driven nucleation and assembly

Guomin Zhu et al.

Summary: Crystallization by particle attachment (CPA) is a common mechanism in colloidal crystallization that can produce nanomaterials with hierarchical morphologies. Oriented attachment, a form of CPA, results in mesocrystals that diffract as single crystals, although the constituent particles are still discernible.

Reversible disorder-order transitions in atomic crystal nucleation

Sungho Jeon et al.

Summary: Despite advances in classical nucleation theory, the nucleation process in atomic crystallization involves a nonclassical mechanism of dynamic structural fluctuations between disordered and crystalline states. In situ electron microscopy observations with millisecond temporal resolution reveal that the early stage of atomic crystallization proceeds through these dynamic fluctuations rather than a single irreversible transition. Experimental and theoretical analyses support the idea that size-dependent thermodynamic stability of the two states in atomic clusters contributes to these structural fluctuations, reshaping our understanding of nucleation mechanisms in atomic crystallization.

Microscopic Kinetics Pathway of Salt Crystallization in Graphene Nanocapillaries

Lifen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the atomistic mechanism of NaCl crystallization from solutions confined within graphene cells was revealed using in situ graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. The research highlighted the impact of confinement on both the kinetics and thermodynamics of crystallization, offering new insights into heterogeneous crystallization theory and a potential avenue for materials design. The findings were attributed to a delicate balance between the substrate-solute interaction and thermodynamics under confinement, as suggested by density functional theory calculations.

Rational Solid-State Synthesis Routes for Inorganic Materials

Muratahan Aykol et al.

Summary: The rational solid-state synthesis of inorganic compounds involves catalytic nucleation on crystalline reactants, where contributions of reaction and interfacial energies to nucleation barriers are approximated from thermo-chemical data and crystal features. Favorable synthesis reactions are identified by Pareto analysis of relative nucleation barriers and phase selectivities, enabling reaction planning for a range of compounds and discussing pathways for retrosynthesis of inorganics.

Visualization of Bubble Nucleation and Growth Confined in 2D Flakes

Zhouyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study uses in situ transmission electron microscopy to observe nanoscale bubble formation in ultra-thin 2D flakes and identifies a three-step pathway for bubble formation in a confined environment, as well as the mechanism for bubble growth. The thorough understanding of the bubbling mechanism in a confined geometry has implications for refining modern nucleation theories and controlling bubble-related processes in the fabrication of advanced materials.

Revealing thermally-activated nucleation pathways of diffusionless solid-to-solid transition

Minhuan Li et al.

Summary: Through microscopic observation, the study found that both athermal and thermally-activated pathways in solid-to-solid transitions are controlled by the softness of the parent crystal. Additionally, three new transition pathways were revealed: ingrain homogeneous nucleation, heterogeneous nucleation assisted by premelting grain boundaries, and wall-assisted growth.

Multistep nucleation of anisotropic molecules

Kazuaki Z. Takahashi et al.

Summary: Researchers used molecular dynamics, machine learning, and molecular cluster analysis to investigate the multistep nucleation of smectic clusters not accounted for by classical theory. They observed characteristic metastable clusters preceding supercritical nuclei, revealing the impact of molecular shape on phase transition dynamics and providing deeper understanding of anisotropic materials.
