Assessing UN indicators of land degradation neutrality and proportion of degraded land for Botswana using remote sensing based national level metrics

Felicia O. Akinyemi et al.

Summary: The study developed national level datasets using cloud-based geospatial computing and machine learning, assessing LDN and proportion of degraded land in Botswana. National metrics showed degraded areas to be 32.6% compared to 51.4% with global default datasets. The use of national level data for LD assessment was found to be closer to field data in Botswana.

Land cover changes through ESA-CCI-LC maps (2000-2015) in Ixtacamaxtitlan, Puebla

Itzel Arrollo-Ortega et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial-temporal changes in land cover in Ixtacamaxtitlan, Puebla from 2000 to 2015 using ESA's CCI-LC global maps. The results indicated losses in forests and grasslands, with gains in croplands and urban areas, particularly in easily accessible areas in the municipality's north-central portion. The accuracy of the 2015 land cover map was high, demonstrating reliability for territorial transformation studies.

Perception of the possible effects of mining to open heaven and its impact on the agriculture in Ixtacamaxtitlan, Puebla, Mexico

Lina Bastidas Orrego et al.

Summary: In Mexico, the increasing number of mining concessions is affecting agricultural activity and natural resources like water. Research conducted in Ixtacamaxtitlan, Sierra Norte de Puebla, found that 77.1% of participants reject the open-pit gold mining project due to concerns about soil fertility and water contamination. The study concludes that there is a struggle to defend and appropriate natural resources in the region.
