Optimal Attitude Maneuvering Analyses for Imaging at Squint Staring and Sliding Spotlight Modes of SAR Satellite

Summary: This study analyzed the imaging maneuver time, retargeting maneuver time, and attitude maneuvering characteristics in squint spotlight mode for imaging multiple targets in a single pass of a passive SAR satellite. The comparison between staring and sliding spotlight modes showed that a longer synthetic aperture time and attitude maneuvering were required for sliding spotlight mode to maintain high resolution while imaging wider swath width. Counter-intuitively, the satellite's rotation center was located below the ground surface during the maneuver towards the target in the sliding spotlight mode. Additional maneuvers were necessary due to overlapping imaging on the point target.
