Electromagnetic interference from left ventricular assist devices detected in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators

Seth H. Sheldon et al.

Summary: In LVAD patients, EMI-related ICD oversensing is rare and can be managed by reprogramming sensitivity. There is no significant difference in R-wave SNR between IB and DB sensing.

Inappropriate Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Therapy With the Use of an Underbody Electrosurgery Dispersive Electrode

Matthew J. Singleton et al.

Summary: The perioperative management of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators is crucial in anesthesia care, with the umbilicus being an important landmark in decision-making. Antitachycardia therapy for the devices may not need to be deactivated for surgery below the umbilicus, but inappropriate therapy can still occur when using underbody dispersive electrodes.

Is diversity harmful?-Mixed-brand cardiac implantable electronic devices undergoing magnetic resonance imaging

Christoph Alexander Koenig et al.

Summary: For patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) undergoing MRI, those with mixed-brand CIED systems do not appear to have an increased risk of adverse events compared to patients with MRI-conditional CIED systems. The complication rate during MRI examinations was low.

Electromagnetic interference on cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators during endoscopy as reported to the US Federal Drug Administration

Jason M. Samuels et al.

Summary: The use of radiofrequency energy during endoscopy can lead to dysfunction of CIEDs, commonly resulting in inappropriate defibrillation, symptomatic bradycardia, and asystole. Patients with CIEDs undergoing endoscopy should undergo pre- and post-procedure device interrogation and re-programming to prevent patient injury.

Cryoablation vs. radiofrequency ablation of the atrioventricular node in patients with His-bundle pacing

Alwin Zweerink et al.

Summary: This study compared the procedural characteristics and outcomes of cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation for AVN ablation in patients with HBP. Cryoablation did not show any advantage over RFA and tended to require more redo procedures. Maintaining a distance of >= 6 mm from the His lead tip is recommended to avoid a rise in capture thresholds.

Usefulness of remote monitoring for the early detection of back-up mode in implantable cardioverter defibrillators

Laurence Guedon-Moreau et al.

Summary: This study illustrates the importance of remote monitoring of ICDs for early detection of reversion to back-up mode, which can facilitate prompt resolution of issues and prevent serious damage to patients. Reversion to back-up mode is a rare event, and remote monitoring can effectively prevent clinical alerts before addressing the ICD problem.

Risk of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Malfunctioning During Pencil Beam Proton Scanning in an In Vitro Setting

Henrik Laurits Bjerre et al.

Summary: The study found that reprogrammable CIED reset was the most common malfunction during proton therapy, with the risk of reset dependent on secondary neutron exposure. The benefits of proton therapy are expected to outweigh the risk of CIED malfunction for most patients.

The Effects of Electrical Stimulation of Lower Extremity Muscles on Balance in Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review of Literatures

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the effect of functional electrical stimulation (FES) compared to conventional therapy alone on balance in post-stroke patients. The results showed that combining FES with conventional therapy was more beneficial in improving balance among stroke patients. However, the studies were limited by small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and reporting of missing data.

Radiofrequency-induced heating of broken and abandoned implant leads during magnetic resonance examinations

Aiping Yao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the additional risks of broken and abandoned leads during MR examinations, with a focus on the impact of wire breaks on in vivo lead-tip power. Results showed a significant enhancement of deposited lead-tip power for broken leads compared to intact leads, reaching up to 16-fold in realistic clinical exposures. The presence of nearby intact or broken wires reduced this enhancement factor to less than 7-fold over the intact lead.

Radiofrequency-induced heating of broken and abandoned implant leads during magnetic resonance

Aiping Yao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential additional risks of broken and abandoned leads in RF-induced heating of AIMD during MR examinations. Results show that the enhancement of deposited lead-tip power for broken leads compared to intact leads can be significantly higher in different scenarios. Presence of nearby intact or broken wires can reduce this enhancement factor, highlighting the importance of considering lead design and clinical routing when assessing risks for MR examinations.
