Increasing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia linked to the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon in the recent decades

Chunzhu Chen et al.

Summary: This study reexamines water vapor sources for arid Central Asia and identifies two main sources: westerly water vapor from the North Atlantic and monsoonal water vapor from the tropical Indian Ocean and South China Sea. The monsoonal transport accounts for 81% of the total variance in precipitation variability. Weakened East Asian summer monsoon results in increased contribution of monsoonal water vapor transport, enhancing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia.

Changes in Observed Daily Precipitation over Global Land Areas since 1950

Steefan Contractor et al.

Summary: This study used a new gridded dataset of daily precipitation to assess climate changes in precipitation at global land locations, finding an overall intensification in precipitation across most land areas globally. The research highlights increases in precipitation intensity in the wet-day distribution, with Asia and the United States showing widespread increases in wet day frequency, and Europe and Australia showing widespread increases in precipitation intensity.

Impact of Developing ENSO on Tibetan Plateau Summer Rainfall

Shuai Hu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that ENSO significantly influences summer rainfall over the southwestern Tibetan Plateau by impacting both vertical motion and moisture deficit. Additionally, the strengthening of the India-Burma monsoon trough during El Nino developing summer contributes to the deficit of rainfall in the southwestern region.

Changes in precipitation amounts and extremes across Xinjiang (northwest China) and their connection to climate indices

Wenfeng Hu et al.

Summary: The climate in Xinjiang is becoming wetter, with increasing intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation, mainly concentrated in mountainous areas, northern Xinjiang, and western Xinjiang, showing significant spatial heterogeneity. There are correlations between extreme precipitation and climate indices, but the relationships are not clearly positive or negative, with many correlations advanced or delayed in phase. Extreme precipitation displays periodic changes, with a frequency of approximately 1-3 or 4-7 years, especially more obvious after the 1990s, however, the exact mechanisms involved in this require further study.

Hydroclimatic trends during 1950-2018 over global land

Aiguo Dai

Summary: Global hydroclimatic changes from 1950 to 2018 show an increase in precipitation over mid-high latitude Eurasia, North America, Southeast South America, and Northwest Australia, while a decrease in precipitation is observed over Africa, eastern Australia, the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, and parts of East Asia. Climate model simulations suggest that many of these observed changes may have resulted from historical external forcing, but some regions show different trends in 21st century projections such as drying over Southeast Asia and wetting over Northwest Australia.

Detectable Intensification of Hourly and Daily Scale Precipitation Extremes across Eastern China

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: Detecting long-term changes in precipitation extremes over monsoon regions is challenging due to observational uncertainty, internal variability, and climate models' deficiencies. This study in Eastern China shows that recent climate warming has intensified precipitation extremes, particularly non-tropical-cyclone-related events, suggesting anthropogenic influence.

Emergence of seasonal delay of tropical rainfall during 1979-2019

Fengfei Song et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that climate warming is causing a delay in tropical rainfall over land due to the increasing influence of greenhouse gases and anthropogenic aerosols. This delay, primarily driven by external forcings, is expected to further amplify in the future as greenhouse gases increase and aerosols decrease.
