CO2 can decrease the dissolution rate of ashed phytoliths

Anh T. Q. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Phytoliths are silica structures found in Si-rich plants, acting as a source of Si for soils and crops. This study showed that CO2 can interact with phytoliths, altering their dissolution rate by changing the solution pH. Managing CO2 flux may be an effective practice for governing the soil phytolith pool.

Silicic acid increases dispersibility of micro-sized biochars

Anh M. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential influence of silicic acid on the surface charge and dispersibility of biochar, finding that silicic acid can increase the negative surface charge of biochar and favor its dispersion state; The density and particle size of biochar also affect its dispersibility and aggregation rate.

Potential use of silica-rich biochar for the formulation of adaptively controlled release fertilizers: A mini review

Minh N. Nguyen

Summary: The application of biochar is beneficial for improving soil properties and reducing the mobility of agrochemicals, but lack of government involvement in many countries creates a need for more incentives. Silica-rich biochars are proposed as potential materials for formulating adaptively controlled-release fertilizers to encourage the utilization of agricultural residues in smart fertilizer technology. This review paper showcases a new route for the formulation of adaptively controlled-release fertilizers using biochar, providing additional insight into upcycling agricultural silica-rich biomass worldwide.

Effects of CO2 and temperature on phytolith dissolution

Anh T. Q. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The dissolution rate of phytoliths in soil is significantly influenced by changes in CO2 and temperature, with both parameters having the ability to accelerate or decelerate the rate. Under extreme conditions of 0% and 15% CO2 concentration, temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius respectively resulted in a six-fold difference in solubility. This suggests a high vulnerability of phytoliths to fluctuations in CO2 and temperature, highlighting the potential impact of global warming on the global biogenic silica pool.
